A fun read - for both of us.

This was a GREAT kid's book. My 7 yr old grandson loved it. Reads well, good sense of humor, gross things kids (especially boys) like. A lot of it reads like 'opposite day' - zombies want pimples. I enjoyed it too.

Okay it’s a diary story book, about what you would expect. Not too badly done, though not my cup of tea… Age level, I don’t think many teens would be interested in this, the character is only 12 and basic rule of writing is your audience is no older than you character. Yes there are exceptions, but not at this level.

For what it is it gets 5 stars, recommend it for free, but if it stays at $0.98 it’s worth buying for the younger ones. It’s not great literature, but at least they are reading English at a semi reasonable level.

An inspiring tail of defying the odds

The title draws the reader into the adventurous life of a woman who has made her mark in the stereotypically male-dominated sport of biking but they soon learn that Bessie faced more than just the sexism of today. Born in 1911 to an interracial couple, she battled the discrimination of the past century to both her race and sex and still came out victorious. This short story takes you through the adventures of her life including rides through the deep south, time spent in the military during WWII, making a living doing tricks on her bike, and how it was all possible due to her profound faith. Bessie Stringfield is a hero and inspiration for women everywhere and for anyone who has ever been told "You can't do it" because quite clearly, she did.

Not very much information. I felt it was written using hearsay rather than factual sources.
All in all, the information was spotty...but maybe that's all there actually is available? Seems there should be more information on her than what I learned from this book.

Bad translation

I think that there is a good balance between text and images, and the images are of high quality. However, this book and other Taschen books that I have read suffer from poor translation. I work in translation and it appears to me that they did not use a native English speaker to translate from the German, as there are quite a few clunky sentences.

Adequate though flawed

I found this book to be a decent, though flawed, introduction to the topic of German Expressionism: The text is engaging, it covers a wide range of German Expressionist painters and groups, and there are many good color reproductions. This being said I have to agree with most of the other reviewers in saying that the editing and translation is rather poor for a book in wide circulation. The author/translator repeats several phrases and terms adnauseam (e.g. "chosen partner"), some of the sentences are awkward and badly constructed, and there are a few editing errors such as on page 127 when the text refers to Gauguin being born in 1853 when it should be Van Gogh. Despite these negative elements the book is still a worthwhile read as it does address such an interesting topic and does a fine job in covering such a large amount of territory

good art, bad editing

Great book, good illustrations. Some of the chapters are very badly edited, however. One repeats the phrase "his illness, from which he never recovered" four times in a short chapter. More typically, they end abruptly with no proper conclusion, as if chopped so as not to exceed space limitations. The writing/editing is the disappointing weak point here. Other times, terms are dropped or events referenced that have not yet been explained in the text. As an art book, the strength of the art can carry it. But it's a shame that it had to be this way.

Bachman and Narici's Functional Analysis

I find Bachman and Narici's book to be an excellent introduction to functional analysis for students who have had a graduate level linear algebra course and some introduction to measure theory. I completed a course in real analysis last year, and I wish I had immediately begun using this book. It seems to me to be somewhat less difficult than the real analysis course, based on Rudin, while reinforcing and building on topics that were introduced in real analysis and other masters level courses. Bachman and Narici's book seems to me to be a bit easier to follow than other functional analysis books, and to bridge the gap between what I already know and more difficult treatments of functional analysis. The book is excellent for self-study and would probably also serve well for a course.

Clear and organised presentation

This book is perhaps the most organized in this field. It is very well written, the presentation really helps build the concepts elegantly and methodically. It is a must have for any one who is interested in learning functional analysis. Some advanced users may find that the book builds a bit slow but it will really help for those who are new in the field.

Bower's vision for harmonious and profitable business structure

Bower's resume includes acting as leader of the esteemed consulting firm Mckinsey & Co. for 17 years. He shares an business model ideal based on a leadership structure rather than a pure authority sturcture. Appoaching this ideal, a business would flourish from the increased exercise of initiative, expression of opinions and even disagreement.

He challenges, "People don't need better bosses, they need better leaders," and "What if people truly liked their work?"

This book gives many imaginative examples of how this vision could be accomplished. There is no current real business example that we can look to. He has set the bar high... sort of an ideal, like a virtue, where the striving never ends. He does point out hints of this effort in some of today's businesses though.

From his life experience and research, he delineates fourteen qualities an ideal leader would have. They include trustworthiness, fairness, unassuming behavior and the willingness to listen.

This is a great book if you are not 100 percent happy with your company's health, and are looking for a possible positive ideological shift in becoming more leadership oriented and upgrading your mission statement.

A worth while book if you still aren't convinced

There is no arguing about the value of leadership versus "command and control" management. If you have read General Electric's annual reports over the past decade, you can probably skip this book. Jack Welch has been on a leadership crusade for years at General Electric, and results speak for themselves. But even at GE,and certainly elsewhere in corporate America, there are significant pockets of "command and control" managers and CEOs, who go through the "leadership" motions, but prefer a good old fashioned "I'm the boss", "do-as-you're-told" approach. Why? As Martha Peak explained in Management Review ("Mission Control", Management Review, April 1996), "the people now at the top got there because they do their best in a command-and-control environment". The "successful" CEOs are where they are today because "command and control" did so well under the old model. Which brings me to a suggestion for the author. "Change" should be on the top of his list of 14 qualities of true leaders. Not just the ability to change, but willingness to seek out change and use it as a tool. Jack Welch has been successful at GE not because he has kept his "neutron Jack" image throughout his tenure, but because he has shown a willingness (or rather, a passion) to change. I once had a "command and control" manager who said "Sure you're empowered, as long as you stay within the rules". I would restate that in the context of leadership as "You're encouraged to break the rules and change them to be more productive and better at everything you do". The book is worth reading, especially if you're not yet convinced that we need more leaders and fewer managers. But don't believe that without adding "change" to the "14 qualities" it will become reality.

Great book on a philosophy and experience of a leader

The Will to Lead greatest benefit is that it is a first person account of a proven business leader in a dynamic business. What is surprising about the book is that it is very non-consulting-ease even through the author is a former Managing Partner from McKinsey & Co. The first person account and stories contain mulitple nuggets of what it takes to be a real leader. You may have to wade through a few stories that seem a bit self serving of the author. However, these are only the recollections of a lifetime of leadership so they are certainly allowable. Other books on leadership (Kotter et al) provide a more scientific view, however Bower's been there and this is what its like approach gives the book credibility and value

English and the Discourses of Colonialism opens with the British departure from Hong Kong marking the end of British colonialism. Yet Alastair Pennycook argues that this dramatic exit masks the crucial issue that the traces left by colonialism run deep.
This challenging and provocative book looks particularly at English, English language teaching, and colonialism. It reveals how the practice of colonialism permeated the cultures and discourses of both the colonial and colonized nations, the effects of which are still evident today. Pennycook explores the extent to which English is, as commonly assumed, a language of neutrality and global communication, and to what extent it is, by contrast, a language laden with meanings and still weighed down with colonial discourses that have come to adhere to it.

An Excellent Book on Colonialism and English Language

Pennycook has a strong insight and argument in English and the Discourses of Colonialism in which he brought lots of fresh ideas that I can make use of in my own research. One of the most useful sections that I can make use of most extensively is the one about colonialism and English Language and Teaching discourses.
Pennycook's argument about ELT and history and discourses of colonialism can be itemized as follows: 1. The colonial construction of Self and Other, of the `TE' and `SOL' remain in many domains of ELT most of whom are still untouched- not researched about. 2. Practices and theories of ELT don't only originate in Britain or the U.S. They are also imported from the colonized countries. 3. Colonialism, in research, shouldn't only be taken as a history of brutal exploitation but the culturally imbedded patterns of thought and practices within the boundaries of the colonized countries do create their own discourses of ELT that must be considered. 4. Curriculum and theory of ELT is not always exported from the Colonizer. The colonized cultures bear and give their ELT theories and practices, and import them to Britain and the U.S.
Those who are interested in ELT and TESOL or those who enjoy readings on Colonialism and Language issues will both enjoy and benefit from this first class book.

The Problem with Pennycook

If you're looking for a detailed study of the ways in which colonialism currently manifests itself in specific ELT methodology and in local contexts, this book will sorely disappoint. If, however, you seek a historical overview of colonialism's impact of the general field of ELT, this book will be of some use. In my own case, I referred to it for the literature review section of my dissertation not because I concur with most of his contentions but because he articulates the viewpoint of a small number of postmodern/colonialist critics of ELT theory and practice. For this reason, I give his book two stars--and perhaps because even academics who should know better need to be rewarded for their earnestness, if not their zealotry. What you will soon note about this book (as with all of Pennycook's major writings) is the degree to which he is willing to use anecdotal evidence and out-of-context quotations to prop up his criticism of the whole ELT enterprise. As one who is clearly enamored with postmodernism, Pennycook's selective application of evidence shouldn't surprise the reader. However, his willingness to ignore any evidence that clearly contradicts his claims is indefensible. Case in point: his relentless verbal assault on Mark Salzman, the author of "Iron and Silk." I was so amazed by Pennycook's commentary that I began to wonder if the book I'd read fifteen years ago was really as empathetic and endearing as I imagined. So I went back and reread it, sharing passages with Chinese friends, including one who made the author's acquaintance during the subsequent filming of his book. Pennycook would have the reader believe that Salzman is a hypocritical, callous-eyed colonialist when even a cursory (but open-minded) reading of his book indicates otherwise. I corresponded with Pennycook about my concerns and he was dismissive, saying that he had moved beyond that critique and had more important matters at hand. That may be, but one is still accountable for what one has published, especially in academic circles and especially considering that Salzman's book is one of the few that offers a genuine counter-discourse of colonialism in ELT. If you are planning to teach or conduct research into the phenomenon of ELT in China, you're better off packing "Iron and Silk" than this morose work.

a book which should be read

Pennycook is convincing in arguing that there is a profoundly colonialist dynamic driving the English teaching industry. However, his thesis that things can never change is depressing, utterly mistaken, and (itself) symptomatic of the colonialist mentality he purports to criticise. Even so, the book should be read by people who intend to teach English overseas.
