Published in the late 1960s, this was one of the first (if not really THE first) serious analysis of the urban planning of Washington DC's federal core--the city we all know, even if we've never been there. Essentially the story of the 1901 McMillan Commission study and report that gave us the National Mall we know so well, Reps uses documented text and great photos to show how the modern city emerged after a century of erratic growth and general neglect. He profiles the key players of more than a century ago, and takes the story into the Kennedy and Johnson years of renewed (and sometimes misdirected) planning efforts, not all of which succeeded. A considerable related literature has appeared in the decades since, but this early Reps title (he did a later color album of historical Washington illustrations--and many other urban planning books) remains very much worth reading.

About the Author

Arvind Durai, CCIE No. 7016, is an advanced services principal architect for Cisco Systems. His primary responsibility in the past 17 years has been in supporting major Cisco customers in the enterprise sector, including financial, retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, state government, utility (smart grid networks), and health-care sectors. Some of his focuses have been on security, multicast, network virtualization, and data center, and he has authored several white papers and design guides on various technologies. He has also been involved in data center design for more than 10 years and has designed many enterprise private cloud data center environments.

Arvind maintains two CCIE certifications: Routing and Switching, and Security. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics and Communication, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (MS), and a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA). He is a coauthor of two Cisco press books, Cisco Secure Firewall Services Moduleand TcL Scripting for Cisco IOS.

He has coauthored IEEE WAN smart grid architecture and has been a panel member for IEEE publications. Arvind also has presented in many industry forums, such as IEEE and Cisco LIVE.

 

Stephen Lynn, CCIE No. 5507 (Routing & Switching/WAN/Security) and CCDE No. 20130056, is an architect at Cisco Systems in the U.S. federal area. He has been with Cisco for more than 16 years and is a subject matter expert on enterprise network architecture. His focus is on large-scale network designs, including campus, WAN, and data center. As a recognized expert within Cisco and in the industry, Stephen has been working on large-scale, complex wide-area network designs in an enterprise environment. Stephen’s focus has been on architectural designs involving 1,000 nodes to more than 10,000 nodes, leveraging technologies such as DMVPN, GET VPN, and FlexVPN to provide transport encryption and network segmentation over IP transport such as MPLS/Ethernet. Other areas of focus include high availability and convergence, QoS, Performance Routing (PfR), and network virtualization.

Stephen is a well-known speaker who has presented at several conferences and seminars worldwide. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia. Stephen is based out of the Cisco office in Washington, DC.

 

Amit Srivastava is a senior manager with Equinix, Inc. At Equinix his team is responsible for global network and product fulfillment for Equinix’s Cloud Exchange platform. Amit formerly worked as a technical leader with Cisco Systems, Inc. He has developed, tested, and enhanced network software for nearly 14 years. Before joining Cisco, he held positions in software application development, management, and testing.

Amit was involved in developing embedded applications for mobile devices in his engagement with Hughes Networks prior to joining Cisco.

Amit has been involved in the development cycles of new operating systems such as IOS XR and IOS XE and delivering features such as MPLS-based Layer 2 and 3 VPNs and traffic engineering. With IOS XE, Amit has worked with platforms such as ASR 1000 and CSR 1000V right from their inception, delivering enterprise-level features like IPsec, NAT, firewalls, NetFlow, AVC, and QoS. Amit holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

Best Resource for Cisco CSR1000V

If you are planning to deploy Cisco CSR 1000V virtual router then this book should be on your list. Virtual Routing in the Cloud is a well written book that goes into details on the CSR 1000V platform and how API enables SDN. This is definitely a must have if you are learning about virtual routers, planning a deployment or simply building a testing platform for certification studies.
This book starts off by covering introductory subjects like virtualization and the CSR 1000V architecture before diving into Hypervisors and its deployment scenarios. Detailed coverage is given to the IOS/IOS XE architecture and Hypervisors considerations for CSR 1000V. Although not a book for learning about Hypervisors operations you will gain a decent understanding on kernels and resource management on ESXi, KVM, Hyper-V and Xen Hypervisors. Finally, for Hypervisors there is detailed instructions on CRS 1000V installation on these Hypervisors especially ESXi.
There is extensive deployment scenarios in the last four chapters. There is useful deployment cases for CSR 1000V as VPN gateways, BGP route reflectors, private cloud deployments with OpenStack and public cloud deployments with Amazon AWS. Finally the book wraps up with a decent coverage of CSR 1000V automation, orchestration and troubleshooting.
Overall, I would highly recommend purchasing this book if you want to learn about virtual routers in particular Cisco CSR 1000V. It’s an easy read and to the point. There are lots of architecture details, installation instructions and deployment scenarios to help you masters CSR 1000V for concept testing, production deployment or certification studies.

I would recommend this book to anyone whether single or married because its' powerful message and earnest encouragement can benefit each and everyone of us. The subject, 'When Two Pray,' is thoroughly covered, never wavering from Holy Scripture. That meant the most to me. It is both powerful and comforting to read.

About the Author
Paul Halter was born in Hagenau, Alsace, in 1956. He pursued technical studies in his youth before joining the French Marines in the hope of seeing the world. Disappointed with the lack of travel, he left the military and, for a while, sold life insurance while augmenting his income playing the guitar in the local dance orchestra. Upon discovering the writings of John Dickson Carr, he gave up the guitar for the pen. He has since written over 30 novels, almost all ‘locked room,’ including ‘The Lord of Misrule,’ ‘The Fourth Door’ – which won the coveted Prix du Roman Policier in 1987, ‘The Seven Wonders of Crime’ and ‘The Demon of Dartmoor’,all available in English on Amazon and Kindle. In 2006 his collection of short stories ‘The Night of the Wolf’ appeared, to critical acclaim.

Halter is as diabolical as ever

Another highly recommended whodunit/howdunit by Paul Halter translated by John Pugmire. The premise above says enough about the actual storyline that to add anything more would probably make for spoilers. Grabbing the reader in the first chapter, Halter's lean narrative style and penchant for using dialogue whenever possible make this a novel that moves along at a brisk pace, adding bafflement upon bafflement until Dr. Twist reveals the answers. Any and every fan of the "impossible crime" story should consider Paul Halter "must" reading. Those who like to try to solve the mysteries before the detective does are advised not to take anything or anyone for granted.

Keep 'em coming, Messrs. Halter and Pugmire!

An invisible killer haunts this English village

The delicious thing about this mystery is that the killer of three pretty young barmaids, a young wife, and a handsome actor appears to be invisible. Witnesses claim an invisible push sent the victims to their deaths. People are pushed off cliffs, down stairs and out of windows. No wonder the locals are keeping an eye out for the Evil One.

There's a rocky summit over rushing waters just outside the village - a convenient spot for dispatching people. Thick fogs also beset the area - a great aid to nefarious acts. Naturally enough the village is a hotbed of superstition. The murderer makes clever use of melodramatic local legends.

It's hard to believe sometimes that Paul Halter is French; he's so good at creating an atmospheric English village and town characters to go with it.

This is one of Halter's Dr. Twist mysteries. Twist is a criminologist, good at penetrating the twisted minds and methods of murderers. He seems to enjoy tormenting his sidekick, Inspector Hurst of Scotland Yard, by not sharing theories with him until the last minute. In this he reassembles other fictional investigators of genius with their Watsons.

Twist sees the case as "more like a fairy tale than a police investigation," but he's determined to solve it logically anyway. I had my eye on the wrong suspect right till the end. The identity of the murderer was a total surprise to me.

This book deserves high marks for supernatural atmosphere, devious murder methods, convincing characters, and a dramatic denouement.

One of the great impossible crime mysteries of all time!

Halter sets the bar very very high with his creative premise-an invisible murderer! Witnesses see victims pushed to their death-by no one visible-on a number of occasions.
But despite the inherent impossibility of the murders, Halter has devised a satisfying and very, very clever solution, that next to no reader will anticipate. The author continues to impress in a genre where one would think it's all been done before. I'm deliberately, as the prior reviewer also did, refraining from any plot details beyond what's in the book description above. When you've finished this you'll want to reread it to see how brilliantly Halter pulled the wool over your eyes. One major clue was right out there, but I missed it, and I suspect I won't be alone. This is a very creepy novel, perfectly-paced. Many many thanks to John Pugmire, who has single-handedly made this wonderful mystery novelist available to an English audience. This is the quintessential one-sitting read, although, like me, you may want to take breaks to try to figure out how the killer could have done what he did, and to make this last a bit longer to lessen the gap between this and the next Halter Pugmire makes accessible. If this is your first Halter, you'll want to get the other three Pugmire has translated.
