Sumer and the Sumerians, by Harriet Crawford

Mesopotamia produced one of the best-known ancient civilizations, with a literate, urban culture and highly-developed political institutions. Harriet Crawford reviews the extraordinary social and technological developments in the region over a period of two millennia (from 3800 to 2000 BC) in this fully revised and expanded edition of her classic text. Drawing on the most up-to-date historical and archaeological sources, she describes the physical environment and covers architecture, trade and industry, the development of writing, and changes in social and political structures. Review
'the real achievement of this slim book is that Crawford does not over-generalise, but leaves the reader with an understanding of both the broad patterns as well as the differences between regions in Mesopotamia and through time.' Bibliotheca Orientalis

A factual description of the Sumerian civilization
By David Oldacre
This 182 page book is one of several I have read in recent months on ancient Mesopotamia, so I was familiar with many of the topics which are included. Professor Crawford states in the preface that the book is intended for students and especially those beginning to study the archaeology and history of the Ancient Near East. She also states that the book attempts to combine a chronological account with that of a number of major themes, her emphasis being on descriptions rather than explanations.

The book covers the development of the Sumerian civilization in Mesopotamia during the period c 3800BC to 2000BC, with the following themes described in separate chapters:

(1) Rediscovery of the Ancient Near East: the physical environment

(2) History, chronology, and social organization

(3) Patterns of settlement and agriculture

(4) Town planning and temple architecture

(5) Public building and private housing

(6) Life, death, and the meaning of the universe

(7) Manufacturing industry, and trade

(8) Writing and the arts

(9) Conclusions - the development of Sumerian society

The book includes 8 maps and 80 illustrations most of which I have seen in the other books I have read on the subject, although I do believe them to be representative of the period The reference section lists the works of some 150 authors, which includes some of the works of the early archaeologists, as well as more recent works of the 1970s and 1980s, and there is also a short index.

For me the first three chapters are the most useful part of the book and provide a very good introduction to the subject.

Chapter 1 is an overview of the archaeological work done to about 1990 since the 19th century rediscovery of the major sites of the Sumerian civilization, and a general description of the nature of the land, the climate and ecological zones, and the trade routes.

Chapter 2 is a review of the basic periods of the development of the Sumerian civilization based on archaeological records, scientific methods of dating, and the historical record from tablets and inscriptions. Professor Crawford points out that while many of these are quite problematic and inconsistent with each other, they still provide much useful solid information

Chapter 3 is a very interesting summarization of the results of a number of geographical surveys performed by Robert Adams in the 1960s, which is covered in considerably more detail in the "The Early History of the Ancient Near East" by Hans J Nissen,

Chapters 4 - 8 provide detailed descriptions of the archaeological findings from the most significant Sumerian sites, with the concluding chapter discussing the outstanding characteristics which may have contributed to the development of the Sumerian civilization.

I liked the fact that Professor Crawford concentrates on the facts "on the ground" and is careful to explain why some proposals put forward by earlier and eminent archaeologists are difficult to accept due to inconsistent or insufficient evidence from which to draw sound conclusions. The book is well written and easy to read, but I must confess that I had to read it a second time in order to prepare this review, which shows that on the first time around I did not absorb as much of the material as I would have hoped.

For me, the weakest part is the chapter on "Writing and the arts" which concentrates more on the arts than on the development of writing which must be the most significant achievement and legacy of the Sumerian civilization. I was also surprised at her statement that there have been no drastic or fundamental changes in the weather patterns. It was my understanding that one of the major driving forces in the development of Sumerian civilization was the requirement to organize the development and maintenance of the irrigation channels as a result of the gradual drying up of the lower part of Mesopotamia during much of the 4th and 3rd millennia. I found that the maps were somewhat vague since they generally only included most important sites, and geographical features such as the Diyala and Hamrin valleys had to be deduced from the descriptions in the text. I also wonder if there have been any major new findings in the 15 years since 1991 when the book was first published.

In summary, I think that this is a solid introduction to the study of the Sumerian civilization, but I prefer "The Ancient Orient - An Introduction to the Study of the Ancient Near East" by Wolfram von Soden as an introduction to the subject. I also prefer "The Early History of the Ancient Near East: 9000 - 2000BC" by Hans J Nissen, since that provides the background of the earlier period leading up to the development of the Sumerian civilization.

Living in Sumer
By Christopher B. Siren
Crawford examines Sumerian culture from an archaeological perspective. Unlike, Kramer's _The_Sumerians_ the focus is more on daily life than on mythology or historical figures. Her discussion of Sumerian religion deals more with its social aspects, how one buries the dead, how temples were laid out and the importance of the role of the priests in society, and less on the doings of the deities. Much more of the work is focused on what types of buildings the Sumerians lived in, what kinds of occupations they had, who they traded what with, and so forth. Also, throughout the work are a number of helpful maps and illustrations. The work appears to be fairly up to date and my first encounter with it was as reccommended reading for an undergraduate archaeology course.

Low quality
By Steven Williams
I can't say a lot about the content of this book; it has been a very difficult read. Tons of research compressed into one book, hard to follow, with scattered summaries that don't follow the main text sequence. But what I would really like to comment on is the Kindle experience.

This book is one of two required texts for an education class I am taking. My friend has the print edition, so I have been able to compare. Two major negative points jumped out to me at once:

First, the tables, figures, and other graphics are super low quality. All of these are bitmaps or some other raster type (whatever Kindle uses for eBooks, I assume) One cannot zoom in on them without changing the text size and losing the figure placement relative to the text. Not that it would help, though; when I do manage to get a figure to occupy the whole page, it is blurry and pixelated. My friend's print edition has beautiful figures, with precise lines and quality text. (For a typical example, those of you who can compare, look at Table 9.3.)

Second, there are no page numbers. A quote from the book's website: "While the book index is included, the page numbers have no meaning in the Kindle eBook, so it is only provided to indicate the topics that are included in the book." What nonsense! My teacher often instructs us to read the table on page such-and-such or turn to this page and read the section on whatever. I end up looking over at a friend's book, copying an exact phrase from that section into the Kindle search tool, and trying to find it that way. I think the author could even include a little "(Page 493 in the print edition)" blurb at the bottom to indicate the parallel. And the book's Contents (left hand side pullout in the Windows Kindle Reader) does not even include links to specific chapters, nor the index! I had to bookmark the index so I could go there to click on the links to chapters.

This brings up a point related to my first one. Tables, figures, and other graphics are totally rasterized, so I can't search using Kindle's tool to find "Figure 3.1" or "Table 5.2". Again, I have to copy text from around the figure from a friend's text edition, then search for that.

In summary, content aside, I feel cheated with the $49 price tag for this digital edition. Ten dollars off the print price is not worth this low quality. And I could get a used paperback copy for less. I have seen free Kindle books on Amazon with better linking and graphics. Let's hope the publishers can correct these issues soon (and without releasing another edition you have to pay for again).

Extremely thorough. Essential for any teacher.
By J. Ward
This is an extremely thick and thorough academic textbook on every aspect of teaching in all subject areas - maths, arts, english, etc. It's not a quick read but I would consider it an absolutely essential textbook for any college student who's looking to be a teacher one day. His chapter on Objectives (lesson planning step #1) is very, very good. Absolutely highly recommend.

A Staff Developer/Administrator/Teacher Opinion
By S. Schwartz
The Skillful Teacher is an incredible tool for working with both new and experienced teachers to fine-tune their classroom skills and expectations for student behavior and achievement. It explains what can (and often does) go wrong in a classroom, gives clear examples of ways to implement classroom procedures, and cites the pertinent research to support recommendations. I have used this book (mostly in its first edition which is very similar) to work teachers for years; it is thought provoking for both needy teachers and "master" teachers. I think highly enough of this book to have given it to my son when he began teaching high school.

Good casual mythology book.
By supersun45
I bought this for a college mythology class because obviously it's cheaper here than at the bookstore. Since it's a paperback, I wasn't intimidated by it. And I was pleasantly surprised at the wide variety of myths available, and at how easy they are to read. Others are easier than others. The names can get confusing. There are Greek myths, of course, but there's also myths from South America, China, India, Africa, and many more. Obviously, these are not the original myths. (I don't even want to think at how big and heavy that book(s) would be.) These are revised versions which contain the big ideas and major plot points. And since, many of these myths are centuries old, there is room for interpretation. It has several long myths, usually called epics. There are excerpts of the Illiad, the Aneaid, Legend of King Arthur, and the Ramayana (my personal favorite), and others which we didn't get to in class. It's great for just reading and learning something new. Not to mention that before each myth there's some historical info and a list of characters. I wouldn't use it as actual reference material if I was to write a serious paper, but it's good info to have around. It was also perfect for the mythology class I had. It wasn't an intro class to future classes, it was a one time humanities class, which I thoroughly enjoyed. So, if you like mythology, but don't want to get too much in depth, this one is a good choice.

A Worth While Read
By Rebecca Harmon
Very good book. It's a worth while read. Arrived promptly and as described. Served it's purpose for use in the World Mythology college course. My son enjoyed getting to read all the stories in it. Some of the stories included: the Illiad, and multiple creation stories. They have about every creation story about every Mythology in it. You have to take it in context. The book arrived in good condition.

It read like cliff-notes. No depth
By Amazon Customer
It was a used textbook as expected, pen and writing in it. All the content was there and was intact. Not actually an interesting book though. It read like cliff-notes. No depth, all quick summaries of each myth.

Why Nations Fight, by Lebow

Four generic motives have historically led states to initiate war: fear, interest, standing, and revenge. Using an original data set, Richard Ned Lebow examines the distribution of wars across three and a half centuries and argues that, contrary to conventional wisdom, only a minority of these were motivated by security or material interest. Instead, the majority are the result of a quest for standing, and for revenge - an attempt to get even with states who had previously made successful territorial grabs. Lebow maintains that today none of these motives are effectively served by war - it is increasingly counterproductive - and that there is growing recognition of this political reality. His analysis allows for more fine-grained and persuasive forecasts about the future of war as well as highlighting areas of uncertainty.

Review
"Richard Ned Lebow makes an extremely successful attempt at broaching lucidly the main theories of war, and offers a most fascinating and convincing way of bringing them up to date. He strongly renews a classical field of IR studies by considering the new conflicts in a very relevant manner."
Bertrand Badie, Professor, Sciences Po, Paris

"In Why Nations Fight, Richard Ned Lebow makes a welcome contribution to the study of war by bringing motives and reasons (rather than just goals and intentions) back in. Extending his theory of human motives, he develops a typology of wars and establishes a series of propositions about war-initiation which he evaluates on a new historical data set. Last, but not least, he speculates on the future of wars by extrapolating from historical shifts in both the salience of motives and the changing understanding actors have of them."
Stefano Guzzini, Senior Researcher, Danish Institute for International Studies

"In Why Nations Fight Richard Ned Lebow continues the path-breaking attempt that he started in A Cultural Theory of International Relations to re-orient the way that we study international relations. In this new book he delivers on his promise to draw on systematic data to assess his theoretical analysis of war and, as a consequence, is able to reach some fascinating and broadly optimistic conclusions. Both his theory and evidence indicates that although one of the major reasons that states have gone to war in the past is to raise their international esteem, because of some complex social and cultural changes, war is now much less likely to achieve this goal. It follows that states are becoming much less motivated to go to war. This is a stimulating and challenging attack on orthodox thinking in the field."
Richard Little, University of Bristol

Interesting theorist and neat presentation
By Michael Kolodzie
This book would be a great reference for anyone interested in a review of causes for every interstate war since the Westphalian definition of statehood. The conclusions, based on analysis of empirical data, are surprising and contradict many international relations theories.

Not a particularly good study
By BernardZ
I think the reader should be warned that this is a politically motivated book with several quite radical political views expressed. For example, religious people as they believe in the hereafter are more willing than non believers to see their children killed in war. Another is that because many American officers come from the southern states of the US, because of their alleged political conservative views the world is right to fear them.

The book is also misnamed, something I hate. It is not as claimed a study of nations but of great powers and the calculations that they make when they go to war.

The core of the study is a table starting from 1650 that breaks down the motives for going to war into four groups interest (gain), security, standing (honor) and others. I do not know much about some of these early wars, but I do find many in the last century questionable. For example, the Russo-Japanese war 1904, I would say Japan motives were interest much more then her standing or honor. Japan wanted to drive out Russia for her benefit. Russio-Polish war of 1919, Poland's motives were interest as Poland wanted to grab land from Russia. Manchurian 1931, the Japanese wanted to take control of a region in China so I would say interest. Similarly, the Sino-Japanese war(1937) was a grab for a large part of China by Japan so it would be interest. The Russo-Finnish war (1939-40), I would say was an attempt by Russia to take over Finland in other words, interest not security as the writer claims. When the German troops came to the region during WW2, they found that the Russian had not fortified the region. Stalin I doubt ever thought in 1939, that the Germans would get that far into Russia. WW2 Hitler's Lebensraum surely is interest. Japan in 1941 was a combination of standing and interest. Etc., etc.

The problem I now have with the study is because I feel much of the table is wrong. The conclusions become questionable.

The writer also gives a breakdown of whether these great powers won or lost. Overall I tend to agree with him on this breakdown, although some of these, I find strange, for example, Russo-Polish war. He feels that Poland lost. I think the conclusion would be better described as a draw. The Sino-Japanese war from 1937 to 1945, I feel would be better classed as a draw. I would say the Japanese were defeated in China by a new conflict with the Russians in 1945.
