This book is incredibly dry and boring. I cannot fathom how any author can keep talking in circles with so many words about such a simple topic. It's truly agonizing to read. It is all theory, with no practical or real examples whatsoever. Reading this book will put you to sleep and make you never want to have anything to do with schools or public relations.

Empire of Difference: The Ottomans in Comparative Perspective, by Karen Barkey

This book is a comparative study of imperial organization and longevity that assesses Ottoman successes as well as failures against those of other empires with similar characteristics. Barkey examines the Ottoman Empire's social organization and mechanisms of rule at key moments of its history, emergence, imperial institutionalization, remodeling, and transition to nation-state, revealing how the empire managed these moments, adapted, and averted crises and what changes made it transform dramatically. The flexible techniques by which the Ottomans maintained their legitimacy, the cooperation of their diverse elites both at the center and in the provinces, as well as their control over economic and human resources were responsible for the longevity of this particular "negotiated empire" Her analysis illuminates topics that include imperial governance, imperial institutions, imperial diversity and multiculturalism, the manner in which dissent is handled and/or internalized, and the nature of state society negotiations.

Review
"If you want to understand how Empires are established, how they flourish and how they vanish, and if you're only reading one book, make it Barkey's Empire of Difference. Here, on impressive display are: an amazing command of six centuries of Ottoman history, a rare ability to illuminate the analysis with comparisons from neighboring empires, and, most important, a never-failing grasp of the theoretical questions that matter. The intellectual ambition of this enterprise is audacious; it is an ambition that is fully realized. It vindicates the promise of historical sociology at the highest level."
-James C. Scott, Yale University

"This book about the past has stunning relevance to the present - and to the future. Karen Barkey has not only contributed to our understanding of empire - she has derived from history lessons that are highly pertinent to the modern, post-imperial world. She combines the skills of an imaginative and disciplined scholar with an intimate personal knowledge of the Ottoman legacy as well as a natural talent for lucid explication and narrative verve. She explains how the longevity of the Ottomans' 'Abode of Peace' was a result of their ability to adapt to changing internal and external circumstances - and how the intercommunal peace itself resulted from Sultans' and viziers' efforts to make a virtue out of diversity. Her concept of a 'negotiated enterprise'-in effect, a social arrangement on a massive scale that relied as much on soft power as hard power-has direct application to the challenges and opportunities for both national and transnational governance today. Altogether an achievement of brilliance, accessibility, and contemporary utility."
-Strobe Talbott, president of the Brookings Institution and author of The Great Experiment

"The Ottoman Empire was one of the most successful and long-lasting examples of legitimate rule over a population characterized by extensive religious, linguistic, and cultural diversity. Karen Barkey convincingly argues that this achievement was due to the Ottomans' ability to maintain openness and tolerance. She draws from a rich literature to argue her compelling case. In retelling the story of the Empire's accomplishments and eventual demise, she greatly succeeds in introducing Ottoman history into the literatures in comparative history and historical sociology. The Ottoman case will now take its deserved place in the growing debate on empires. This book will be mandatory reading for any intelligent discussion on empire."
-Çağlar Keyder, Binghamton University, State University of New York and Boğaziçi University

About the Author

A great sociological essay on the empire
By Amazon Customer
Karen Barkey's book is most welcome because it rejuvenates sociological theories of empire.

She starts by proposing an "imperial model" (Part I of the book). Here, she uses a social network perspective and suggests that empires "broker" local networks and political units (such as nations etc); this "brokerage" is sustained via a number of institutions from the imperial center that exert indirect rule on the periphery. A counterintuitive conclusion is that empire fosters diversity and shelters difference, much more so than other political regimes (think about how nation-states try to erase religious or ethnic differences).

Then she delves into the transformation of the Ottoman Empire into a Nation-State (Part II). This, in itself, is highly informative. While I am not an expert on the Ottoman Empire, she obviously masters the topic. The empirical material is very well-exposed and confirms the theories exposed in the first part of the book.

The book received two awards in 2009, and rightly so:

The "J. David Greenstone Award" of the Politics and History Section, American Political Science Association

The "Barrington Moore Book Award" of the Comparative and Historical Sociology Section, American Sociological Association (co-winner)

The key takeaway of the book is, for me, as a sociologist, that "empire" is not necessarily something that should be discarded on ideological grounds, rather studied scientifically.

This is a must read for sociologists, political scientists, and historians who are interested in empires and do not fear to reconsider their presuppositions.

superb socio-historic perspective on the Ottoman Empire
By Robert J. Crawford
This is a dazzling and fascinating tour from the establishment of the vast and durable Ottoman Empire to the birth of the Turkish modern state, not from a European perspective but from a near-Eastern one. However, to be perfectly clear, this book is an academic work of sociology as applied to history: it is heavy with the driest jargon, has no narrative whatsoever to it, is frequently repetitive, and demands that the reader know a great deal about not just Ottoman history, but also histories of the Romans, Habsburgs, Russians, and Byzantines. From my reading, I would say it is a graduate-level book. That being said, the ground that the book covers - how to explain the longevity of certain multi-ethnic and -religious empires - is absolutely essential for any serious student of history. This book is the best single treatment I have ever seen of the subject and will richly reward anyone who perserveres with it. While difficult, once I finished it I went right back through it a second time, underlining it with the enthusiasm of a student.

Rebelling against the template of rise and decline, the author seeks to explain what enabled the Ottoman Empire to last from 1300 to the eve of WWI. She breaks down the stages of the Ottoman Empire into 3 periods: 1) the establishment of a vast geographic empire that tolerated and absorbed representatives from virtually all of the major mediterranean civilizations as well as many of Asia; 2) the long struggle to wage (and finance) innumerable wars in the 17th and 18th centuries, which saw the establishment of a more or less Sunni Islamic state that relied on the "privatization" of many essential state functions; 3) the failed transition from empire to nation-state, with the rise of extraordinary violence and exclusion as coherent political entities emerged.

Up to the end of the 16th C, the Ottoman Empire created a state that was ruled in a hub and spoke model, emanating from Istanbul. The Sultan essentially cultivated the elites of conquered territories - preserving their status, offering them some peace and justice, and in stark contrast to the Christian persecutions that were gaining momentum, tolerating and even encouraging religious and ethnic differences among its subjects. The elites were co-opted, but they also saw it in their self interest to accommodate the Ottomans. The religions were a fluid mix of Christian and Moslem variations, that were "syncretic", i.e. feeding off eachother and merging in their forms and even their beliefs; this reflected the balance of ethnicities over which the Ottomans presided, straddling Europe and the Near East. (This would bear serious and deeper investigation. It is genuinely inspiring.)

What is truly fascinating is how Barkey establishes the subtle balances that existed: the non-Muslims accepted an inferior status - a clear boundary - in exchange for autonomy and the designation of circumscribed areas for their own enterprise. Muslims controlled the military with all its booty and glory, the non-Muslims had trade, certain areas of administration, etc. Each community interacted only with the center and did not forge relations across their boundaries. Ottomans in their turn acted as "brokers" between interests, negotiating with extraordinary flexibility and pragmatism and choosing elite members of the communities who would cooperate and in their turn gain advantage. These boundaries also were somewhat porous, with conversion to Islam (exempting converts from taxation, for example) as well as entry by Christian youths into the elite Janissaries warrior class.

Once the Ottomans reached the apogee of their expansion, the world had changed in a number of ways. Other powers with new technologies and ideas, were constantly encroaching on their borders, which were increasingly costly to maintain by warfare. Perhaps more important, with the conquest of the old arab lands, the balance of population shifted decisively towards Sunni Islam, lessening the tolerance for which the empire had become known. This entailed severe restrictions of who could work in the Ottoman court, which lost much of its eclectic mix and flexibility. Nonetheless, even though medresses and an elite ulema were set up by Suleiman the Magnificent, Islam became more or less a tool of the state. Dissent in this period was not tolerated if it had an ideological character that, through ideas, might threaten the the incredible diversity of subtle balances that centuries of negotiation and accommodation had established between communities.

In another vein, the financial stresses of constant warfare led to a decisively important development in the administration of the Empire. To raise funds quickly, the Sultan sold rights to tax farmers, which created an entirely new class of autonomous elites that also moved into commercial trading at the moment that the industrial revolution was dawning. These elites, she says, created "horizontal" relations with each other, supporting the Sultan in many cases (as in his struggles against Janissaries allied with the conservative ulema for deadly shows of force), but also carving out their own areas of interest, injecting political ideas rather than merely territorial concerns into the dialogue with the state. This signaled the end of the hub and spoke model, delegating many state functions to regional actors who gained great power and autonomy while forging new alliances with each other.

Finally, in the 19C, the Ottoman state attempted to modernize itself with the administrative tools of the nation state. Unfortunately, with the many strains of reforms stances that emerged - Enlightenment oriented, Islamic, and nationalist-Turkic - the various nations and ethnic groups no longer felt a part of the compact of the Empire and sought increasingly to extricate themselves. This was 19C nationalism and it tore the Empire apart. The traditional toleration, which has made the Ottoman Empire a beacon of enlightened governance, died. But the world had also become a far more complex place than the command-economies that existed to the end of the 17C.

The author does clearly address the issue of Armenian genocide, which she sees as a product of the Young Turks and their attempts in the context of war with Russia to instill a pan-Turkic ideology (as a new basis of political legitimacy), in essence shamefully turning the violence of the state on "outsiders" within the Empire as a unifying threat. Her treatment of this is curiously muted and dryly academic, but she does not shrink from addressing it even though she is an emigrant from Turkey.

Interestingly, there is no question that Barkey could have written this differently in terms of style. In her introduction, she evokes the differences between her grandfather's attitude (who loved the bounded culture mix that still existed in the 19C empire) and that of her father, who was concerned with the modernization of the Turkish nation after WW!. She probably had to write the book with her sociologist colleagues in mind for obvious career considerations, which is a pity for the interested layman reader as her talent as a writer surpasses that of most academic sociologists.

Recommended with enthusiasm. This is one of the most interesting history books I have read this year.

This is a wonderfully imaginative look at the Ottoman history
By ahmet goksun
This is a wonderfully imaginative look at the Ottoman history. Professor Barkey explains that what made Ottomans so successful was not their military might, or religious fervor, but just the opposite their flexibility, ability to adapt and build coalitions with people and cultures very different than their own.

Clojure Programming, by Chas Emerick, Brian Carper, Christophe Grand

Clojure is a practical, general-purpose language that offers expressivity rivaling other dynamic languages like Ruby and Python, while seamlessly taking advantage of Java libraries, services, and all of the resources of the JVM ecosystem. This book helps you learn the fundamentals of Clojure with examples relating it to the languages you know already, in the domains and topics you work with every day. See how this JVM language can help eliminate unnecessary complexity from your programming practice and open up new options for solving the most challenging problems.

Clojure Programming demonstrates the language’s flexibility by showing how it can be used for common tasks like web programming and working with databases, up through more demanding applications that require safe, effective concurrency and parallelism, data analysis, and more. This in-depth look helps tie together the full Clojure development experience, from how to organize your project and an introduction to Clojure build tooling, to a tutorial on how to make the most of Clojure’s REPL during development, and how to deploy your finished application in a cloud environment.

Practical and accessible
By Publius
This is the most practical book on Clojure I've seen yet. At this point I've almost completely made my way through it. I bought it directly from O'Reilly (not Amazon) because I wanted it in PDF format.

I think what I like most about this book is that the authors have most often chosen to explain things in reference to scripting languages like Ruby and Python, and from business and mundane-data examples, rather than using examples from mathematics or computer science. This choice has made Clojure's power very accessible and easy for me, coming from a linux (Bash, Python, C) and web development (PHP, Ruby, Javascript), background and without any math or CS degrees. I am very grateful to the authors for writing it in such a down-to-earth way so that I have been able to absorb it easily.

I also enjoyed the extensive chapters on the practical use of the language, for things like web development, database access, tooling, and packaging. Also, their approach to discussing Java interop was very helpful to me not having dealt with Java much in the past.

Their extensive use of footnotes to comment their code examples is very helpful. When I find myself reading a line of example code and wondering why they did it that way, the footnote answers my question clearly and simply. I might have preferred actual inline comments rather than footnotes-- less jumping around in the PDF-- but the content is great.

In general, while reading it, every question that comes up in my mind seems to be answered within that paragraph or the next one (or in a footnote); the overall flow of the book and the path they've taken for building one concept upon another seemed very natural to me.

Even though it's easy to read linearly, I also found it very easy to skip around as well. I found many of the chapters in the Practicum section to be as good or better than the documentation for the projects they describe. The authors seem to account for the fact that readers might do that, and provide links throughout those chapters to earlier chapters of the book. I tend to reach for the book instead of for the documentation for some projects; it's useful as a HOW-TO.

I don't know if people who have a lot of lisp experience or CS degrees would be as grateful for this book as I am. But it has made learning a very powerful language into a fairly painless and straightforward process for me.

If you're coming to Clojure from languages like Ruby, Python, Javascript, etc., I'd recommend "Clojure Programming" as your first step.

A clear, comprehensive, and effective guide to Clojure
By Avi Flax
Before reading this book, I was proficient with Java, JavaScript, Python, and a few other languages -- all primarily object-oriented and ALGOL-derived. Lisp and Functional Programming (FP) seemed alien and bizarre. But after hearing that people were getting real work done using FP with Scala and Clojure, and hearing Rich Hickey, the creator of Clojure, speak at Strange Loop, I was inspired to get over my apprehension and learn functional programming and Clojure.

I decided it would be unwise to try to learn FP and Clojure at the same time, so I first wrote a program using FP in languages with which I was already familiar: CoffeeScript and Scala. It didn't take long for me to build an appreciation for the paradigm.

Once I felt that I had a decent understanding of FP, I asked on Twitter whether anyone could recommend a book, and got a very enthusiastic recommendation for this one from Sean Corfield. It was available under O'Reilly's pre-release program, so I was able to buy and read pre-release PDFs of the book.

The bottom line is that this book gave me a solid understanding of Clojure and enabled me to learn the language and gradually start using it. The concepts are presented in a thoughtful sequence wherein each one builds on the next, and it's made clear how each element of the language relates to the others.

The writing, examples, and organization are all excellent. And the book gets extra points for going beyond just explaining the language and how to use it, by being extra-comprehensive and covering how to really use the full Clojure ecosystem to build really useful software.

This is worth highlighting: if the book had been comprised of only chapter 1, "Down the Rabbit Hole", and the first 2 parts, "Functional Programming and Concurrency" and "Building Abstractions", it would have been an excellent book which I'd be recommending wholeheartedly. The inclusion of the subsequent parts, "Tools, Platform, and Projects", "Practicums", and "Miscellanea" make the book an invaluable resource and a fantastic value.

Ultimately, the book succeeds in conveying not only Clojure the language, but also the Clojure way, best practices, and key resources.

outstanding Clojure introduction for smart programmers
By R. Friesel Jr.
In "Clojure Programming", the preface asks "Who is this book for?" It's for a lot of people: experienced JVM developers, curious Rubyists, dissatisfied Pythonistas... Developers of all stripes that are looking to get introduced to, and become proficient in, Clojure. I myself have been circling the Clojure drainpipe for a while now, very nearly getting completely sucked in on numerous occasions. I've followed no one's advice though--I have not started small, and instead keep jumping into sophisticated middle parts and getting mired. [1] I think I would have benefitted from this book a year ago; I'm certainly benefitting from it now.

At 587 pages [2], "Clojure Programming" is hardly a tome, but it is comprehensive, appreciably thorough, and makes a concerted effort to be accessible to the Clojure and JVM neophyte. That being said, the book is also far from short, and makes no pretenses about easing you into the language: you'll be programming a naïve REPL by the end of chapter one. But this head-first approach is one of the reasons to love this book.

Emerick et al. found an excellent format for organizing the book, logically sequencing the material, and peppering chapters and sections with the right kind of illustrative, "koan"-style sample problems, eschewing the alternative of walking you through some contrived and over-arching application built one concept (and thus one chapter) at a time. As such, the book is broken into five sections:

1. Functional Programming and Concurrency (the foundation);
2. Building Abstractions (the sophisticated stuff);
3. Tools, Platform, and Projects (the eco-system);
4. Practicums (Clojure in the real world); and
5. Miscellanea (other important stuff).

What's marvelous about this structure is that you can decide for yourself whether to read it cover-to-cover, or whether to cherry-pick just the chapters relevant to your immediate challenges. What's helpful is that the book cross-references itself for many key concepts. In the thick of chapter one and you don't know what this "classpath" nonsense is? Jump ahead to chapter eight! [3] Deep into chapter nine and you're lost about how Clojure protocols relate to Java's interfaces? A footnote steers you back to chapter six! The care taken to create these kinds of cross-references is tremendously valuable because it allows you to opt-in to some advanced concepts early on, getting a preview of the powerful features ahead of you.

Though "Clojure Programming" is overflowing with thoughtful, detailed, and well-composed information, where it really shines is the "Practicums" section. When I first started skimming the chapters in this section, the first thought that occurred to me was: "Herein lies the true esoterica." I read about Clojure's numerics and mathematics, about its intriguing use of "rationals", about unchecked operations. I read about how to idiomatically implement different design patterns in Clojure. The deeper I got into this section though, the more that I realized that this was not a bunch of "out there" riddles and puzzles whose only purpose was to show off the sparkling fringes--no, this section was to demonstrate Clojure's solutions to "real world" problems, and the kind of advantages afforded you by its functional style. [4] That being said, I appreciated how Emerick et al. were vigilant in observing when different approaches or language features would serve you well, and when you would be wise to avoid them.

A few other items that I feel compelled to point out:

* The chapter on Java and JVM interoperability is strong. Anyone looking to introduce Clojure into their (JVM-based) organization would be wise to memorize this information...
* ...and then also memorize the chapter that specifically addresses how to go about introducing Clojure to your organization.
* As with the other Clojure texts I've read, their is a focus on discussing "idiomaticity", and differentiating between "working" or "valid" Clojure code, and idiomatic Clojure code. Seeing this again makes me wish that more authors writing about other languages put this much emphasis on idiomatic style.
* Also, I am filled with tremendous gratitude that Emerick et al., when they cite Wikipedia at all, cite particular articles as "a jumping off point" or as "a surprisingly good resource" for the subject matter. I have read several books recently that cite Wikipedia as an authoritative reference and... Well, I find that to be in bad form.

I find it easy to recommend "Clojure Programming" to anyone with an interest in the language. There is enough "introductory" material that smart programmers will be guided in the right directions as they get started, but there is also enough detailed coverage that the book will grow right along with you. The chapters on the Clojure eco-system will help to steer you toward the right tools and resources to organize, manage, and scale your projects--as well as how to integrate them laterally within the JVM. Lastly, the practicums give you concrete and balanced approaches to answering some of the questions that you go into the whole endeavor already asking. I will be referring to this book often as I continue my explorations into Clojure.

---

[1] Case study: the first significant chunk of time I spent with the language was with early drafts of The Joy of Clojure: Thinking the Clojure Way. "JoC" is definitely an "intermediate-to-advanced" book.

[2] Not counting the preface and index, which brings that up to 630.

[3] Which, I'd like to add, is currently my favorite semi-layman's explanation of the JVM's classpath.

[4] I suppose this should have been obvious from the name of the section. (What can I say? I got caught up in the details of rational numbers.)

From the Back Cover

“…this is a text that uses thematics thoughtfully and deeply rather than sparsely and

sporadically. Literature for Life, as both its title and content suggests, attempts to forge a

close relationship between students’ reading and life experiences.”

—Erin Radcliffe, Central New Mexico College

“These chapters (reading chapters) are flat-out superb, at least for me: They include and

“codify” every element I have used to break down our literature structurally, which the

students respond to well. Your poetry unit is exceptionally good, what with its clearly

defined and well-illustrated bits on poetics: meter, imagery, etc. This whole chapter is an

orderly, clear, comprehensive, and very teachable masterpiece.”

—Vicki J. Sapp, Tarrant County College

“Overall, the textbook is thoughtful and useful. I believe that the authors really put

thought into selecting texts that will work for many, many types of students, and this is

important. I can definitely see myself selecting this text for use. I would have to do very

little to supplement this text in my classes. I will propose its acceptance to our textbook

committee once it is in print.”

—Anne C. Spurlock, Mississippi State University

“I do think this will resonate with students based on the approach of the text. Students

often don’t see the relevance of literature, but the themes are such that students see the

connection between the writings and their own lives.”

—Africa Fine, Palm Beach State College

“Literature for Life is a student-friendly, college-composition, literary text written in a

direct, fluid manner that cannot help but engage student and instructor alike in the

processes of critical reading, writing, and thinking. Don’t take my word for it; just order

a copy today and see what I mean.”

—Rebecca McLauchlin Whitten, Mississippi State University

When I got the book the cover was hanging on by a thread. I didn't think much of this. Right before I sent it to be returned the front loose leaf cover finally fell off. When It arrived returned they rejected it and charged me for the remaining balance.

Beware, return right away if there is any damage.

The Art of Loving (Classics of Personal Development), by Erich Fromm

Since it was first published " The Art of Loving" has become a classic, inspiring thousands of people with its clarity and power. Erich Fromm, the renowned psychoanalyst, sees love as the ultimate need and desire of all human beings. In this book, he discusses every aspect of the subject: romantic love, the love of parents for children, brotherly love, erotic love, self-love and the love of God or the divine. He looks at the theory of love as it appears throughout the cultures of the world and at the practice, how we show or fail to show love to one another. Love is an art, which we need to develop and practice in order to find true commitment. We need to find it, individually and as a society as a whole. Erich Fromm is one of the major figures in the field of psychoanalysis. He devoted himself to consultant psychology and theoretical investigation for many years. He was the author of numerous books, including " Fear of Freedom" and "Psychoanalysis and Zen", before his death in 1980.

Genius
By Kaan
I'm luckier(in a materialistic sense) than %99 of the population yet I haven't been happy for a long long time. I've known the steps I should take for a happier life for years but I haven't been able to take those steps. Simply being aware of the way to a happier life was not enough to overcome my educated awareness of the insignificance of my existence. The concept of rational faith mentioned in the book brought about a certain kind of enlightenment which enables me to see things differently and urges me to work on my willpower. The last two chapters should be read by everyone capable of understanding it. Do not let the intricately worded section on paradoxical logic discourage you from reading those last chapters, which is in my opinion the best part of the book.
Also, how he manages to work religion into this book without giving away his atheism is remarkable. Though it leaks through, a religious person would not be offended at all. Living god as opposed to believing it is a concept that is most probably contributed by his intellectual(!)(read the book to understand the !) endeavors in zen buddhism which amplifies the depth of his analysis greatly.

This book is full of wonderful insights. I probably highlighted half of it!

It never occurred to me before that selfishness might be tied to a lack of self-love. Interesting!

This book made me question the character of many of my relationships. I became aware that I rarely truly love. This is something that saddened me but is important to realize. Hopefully, I will one day become capable of real love.

One thing that I didn't care for was the part about economics from a Marxist perspective. I realize that Fromm was part of the Frankfurt School/critical theory scene, and they were all heavily influenced by Marx, but still, I find that this stuff detracted from what he had to say about love.

1950's To Today, Still Relevant.
By M. DeKalb
Published in 1956, the entirety of this work postulates love as an art, one which requires practice and for it to be successful a certain degree of attained maturity. As an art it requires knowledge and effort. Fromm makes allusions to modern cultures starvation for love - `trashy songs', happy and unhappy cinema - and states that most people assume it is something we `fall into' as opposed to the more realistic `standing in' and that a `mature love is union under the condition of preserving one's integrity, one's individuality.' (265).

This is certainly a difficult read if you're not prepared, if you're not to some degree `mature' as Fromm posits. Also of notable difficulty are Fromm's concern with machination, automation and the anologies he draws from the capitalistic market unto man. It's easy to see how the two correlate, and I do feel it's an apt description, but I could also see how people unobservant to how our society functions might miss the parallels. Fromm is also very concerned with parables of the religious sort, which may deter some people from investing in the work as a whole, however, remember this is about `love', first and foremost. Something we all need to remain cognizant of and practice daily.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS:

In popular cultural belief being lovable means an admixture between being popular and having sex appeal. But because love requires a mastery of theory and then mastery of practice it takes much work and resultantly, many failures. The third part of love, after theory and practice, is that it must be a matter of utmost concern. It requires devotion to order its success as an art. Of our culture Fromm states `in spite of the deep-seated craving for love, almost everything else is considered to be more important than love' (93). The ultimate goal of love is to overcome man's separateness from the rest of the world as `the deepest need of man, then, is the need to overcome his separateness, to leave the prison of his aloneness.' (127) Fromm also speaks about relevant psychiatric issues and drug abuses that stem from too grand a sense of isolation from fellow man and the desire, more often than not, for conformity (read `Escape from Freedom'). However, aside from connections to the world through work, play, forced adherence to societal rules, or adopting the herd mentality, `the full answer lies in the achievement of interpersonal union, of fusion with another person, in love.' (232).

Object vs. function - most Western culture sees love as easy, it's the object of love which is difficult, and often transient. The true function of love is meant to be separate from the object, for a person is not a thing as we see `things' in the Western world. Because of this love is treated the same as commodities on the market - buying into the best available option, then upgrading when the time is right.

Persons who `fall in love' and mistake this feeling for love, gradually begin to tire of the person and seek another such experience which they hope will endure, of this Fromm says `this type of love is by its very nature not lasting.' (74) Love is an activity, not a passive affect and it is `primarily giving, not receiving.' (286).

Prerequisites of maintaining love are a capacity to love one's neighbor, true humility, courage, faith and discipline. To these are the important practicable concepts of care, responsibility, respect and knowledge. Love is one path which can be utilized to know thyself, to know some of the secrets of the individual and thereby the secrets of humankind.

At the end of section one Fromm takes a shot at Freud for being too shallow, and for not investigating the occurrence of sexual-polarity present in both genders.

Fromm covers:
Love between parent and child - key to this notion are the ideas that a mother's love is unconditional and cannot be earned, if it need be earned then it is already gone. A child is loved because they are, because they exist, not because of any potentiality. This is part of a child's development until about the age of 10, at which point they transition to practice loving instead of just being loved. Fromm also differentiates the different types, paternal (training in the world, love on condition, `deserved' love) and maternal (again, unwarranted, unconditional love). An interesting postulate arises, that of `milk and honey' as it relates to the promised land (yes, Fromm gets quite theological at times). `Milk' is to represent the care and affirmation (a mother's milk) and `honey' is to represent the sweetness of life, the good feelings toward the world, an unjaded perspective, a happiness wrought from being alive.

Brotherly love - love that is given to the whole of mankind, for we are all in this struggle together.

Erotic love - that between two sexually exclusive partners, `it is also perhaps the most deceptive form of love there is.' (661) Most often after a stranger has become known and the `falling in love' phase is over, there is nothing further to learn and the relationship sputters out. For most the intimacy remains only in sexual contact. Erotic love `is exclusive only in the sense that I can fuse myself fully and intensely with one person only.' (693) It's sole premise exists in `that I love from the essence of my being - and experience the other person in the essence of his or her being.' (696) Loving a single person in this manner is a choice, a judgment and a promise, and because of the highly differentiated aspects between certain individuals and because of this Fromm states that an individual is neither wrong nor right in maintaining or dissolving a relationship that presents as unsuccessful.

Self-love - This is not to be confused with egoism or narcissism. To adequately love anybody, we must also and foremost love ourselves. It is not a crime to do so and in fact, if we don't love ourselves we are completely incapable of loving anybody else maturely - `love toward themselves will be found in all those who are capable of loving others.' (738)

Love of God - Fromm differentiates between the matriarchical and patriarchical forms of religion, with the matriarchy coming first. This again references the types of love each God would distribute toward his `children'. Fromm himself postulates that God is a non-interventionalist, and that most mature people would see it this way. He also delves into the paradoxical logic of being and not being at the same instance, an impossibility using rational, stereotypical logic. Most importantly, regarding religion and love in general - `a knowledge not in right though but in right action' is the way in which to determine all proper motive. In our Western culture, belief in God is a thought process, much less an action process.

Section III: The Disintegration of Love in the Western Society

Further elaborates upon the notion of love as a commodity which can be exchanged and traded much like current market trends. Fromm also touches upon the general disconcertion people have toward being alone, but failing to realize that from this place, only, can they truly love another person. Fromm also makes sure to point out that sex IS NOT love, nor is viewing a relationship as `team-work'. Disipline, concentration and patience and a great sense of humility are necessary here, as in love with all mankind.

Most importantly all of this practice requires faith. The ability to step outside yourself, release your story and just believe, blindly... very hard to do, must needs practice, hence love surely is - an art.

Quotes:

`There is hardly any activity, any enterprise, which is started with such tremendous hopes and expectations, and yet, which fails so regularly, as love.' (79)

`Love is the active concern for the life and the growth of that which we love. Where this active concern is lacking, there is no love.' (338)

`One loves that for which one labors, and one labors for that which one loves.' (349)

`Mature love says: I need you because I love you.' (514).

`If I truly love on person I love all persons. I love the world, I love life. If I can say to somebody else, "I love you". (584)

`One other frequent error must be mentioned here. The illusion, namely, that love means necessarily the absence of conflict.' (1255)

`Love, experienced thus, is a constant challenge; it is not a resting place, but a moving, growing, working together; even whether there is harmony or conflict, joy or sadness, is secondary to the fundamental fact that two people experience themselves from the essence of their existence' (1265)

Mathematical Analysis I (Universitext), by Vladimir A. Zorich

This second English edition of a very popular two-volume work presents a thorough first course in analysis, leading from real numbers to such advanced topics as differential forms on manifolds; asymptotic methods; Fourier, Laplace, and Legendre transforms; elliptic functions; and distributions. Especially notable in this course are the clearly expressed orientation toward the natural sciences and the informal exploration of the essence and the roots of the basic concepts and theorems of calculus. Clarity of exposition is matched by a wealth of instructive exercises, problems, and fresh applications to areas seldom touched on in textbooks on real analysis.

The main difference between the second and first English editions is the addition of a series of appendices to each volume. There are six of them in the first volume and five in the second. The subjects of these appendices are diverse. They are meant to be useful to both students (in mathematics and physics) and teachers, who may be motivated by different goals. Some of the appendices are surveys, both prospective and retrospective. The final survey establishes important conceptual connections between analysis and other parts of mathematics.

The first volume constitutes a complete course in one-variable calculus along with the multivariable differential calculus elucidated in an up-to-date, clear manner, with a pleasant geometric and natural sciences flavor.

Review

“This is a thorough and easy-to-follow text for a beginning course in real analysis … . In coverage the book is slanted towards physics (mostly mechanics), and in particular there is a lot about line and surface integrals. … Will be popular with students because of the detailed explanations and the worked examples.” (Allen Stenger, MAA Reviews, maa.org, May, 2016)

“...Complete logical rigor of discussion...is combined with simplicity and completeness as well as with the development of the habit to work with real problems from natural sciences. ” From a review by A.N. Kolmogorov of the first Russian edition of this course

“...We see here not only a mathematical pattern, but also the way it works in the solution of nontrivial questions outside mathematics. ...The course is unusually rich in ideas and shows clearly the power of the ideas and methods of modern mathematics in the study of particular problems....In my opinion, this course is the best of the existing modern courses of analysis.” From a review by V.I.Arnold
