A great book

I recently received my copy of Seeking Balance in an Unbalanced World: A Teacher's Journey and as a fellow educator I found it to be a quick and easy read. It included several thought provoking personal exercises to help the reader become more aware of their whole self. Once aware, you are given ideas to help become a more balanced, whole person.
Once the foundational concepts were explored, the author turns her literary attentions to what seems to be one of her greatest strengths, the world of education. Her thoughts encourage us to become more aware of the whole self so that we may become a more balanced person. In doing so, we will be better able to serve the children in our classrooms. This in turn will allow those children to become more balanced themselves. I found this to be an extremely valuable concept to apply as we strive to help children grow and develop in today's society.
Another valuable facet of this book is a very unique and comprehensive look at various activities that can be used in the classroom. Educator's, whether a first year teacher or a seasoned veteran, can benefit from the ideas presented.
In closing, I would highly recommend this book to any person, parent, and/or educator who is striving to find an innovative way to balance their personal and educational lives and the lives of those closest to them.

descriptive outline of the book inaccurate

I pre-ordered this book from the publisher because I thought it was going to be a new and fresh look at a wellness model specifically through the lens of an education professional. What came was a book which crammed all the wellness model stuff into the first chapter of the book, 21 pages out of a 138 page book. The rest of the chapters deal primarily with classroom management, a rather unbalanced focus for a book about maintaining balance. Angela Schmidt Fishbaugh offers sound management suggestions, creating a pleasant and organized environment, realizing your own attitude effects the classroom, looking at the whole child rather than focusing on just one thing, giving children the tools and practice needed to self-regulate and problem solve independently. However, if you have worked/studied in Early Childhood Education recently none of it will be new insight.

First-Year Teacher's Saving Grace

Seeking Balance in an Unbalanced World: A Teacher's Journey is an excellent book for those who desire to become teachers or those who are first-year teachers. I would recommend this book to be the center of any Mentor/Mentee Program. Angela Schmidt Fishbaugh does an excellent job explaining how to turn those everyday chaotic aspects of being a teacher into personal lessons in the dimensions of your inner self. Through a positive approach, the author teaches you to seek the good in every situation and in every student...to see and understand the whole person, not just the superficial person. She also gives great tips on classroom techniques to help those first-year teachers grasp the idea of a "whole-listic" classroom.

Fascinating Coffee Table Book, but Useless (Maps Needed)

This book would be great for armchair travelers, since it is full of bunches of fascinating worldwide travel destinations, many of which I haven't heard about before. Most, but not all, of them have nice photos, and the descriptions make most of them seem very compelling.

Much of it is impractical blue-sky however, e.g. Fly to the South Pole (Jan 3), Swim the English Channel (July 6). Some of them are merely seasonal (especially the outdoor destinations) rather than festivals that occur on specific days, and so you wonder why it has to pretend that a specific day is the one to choose. For some, the date of the specific event (e.g. Coachella Music Festival) change with the year, so giving a specific date is misleading.

Also I question some of the choices -- for a country I know about, what they picked is not the best, and not the only occurrence of the activity they chose. I get the feeling the 365-day constraint made they have to leave off things if there was already something else for that day.

However, it doesn't try very hard to be an actually useful book. It really needs some regional maps which show what events are in a certain area. If I want to focus on great things to do in just N. America, for example, there is no easy way to see what those are without simply paging through the entire book.

It would also be nice if it had a few topic lists, e.g. list of all the music festivals it mentions, lists of all the animal observations, lists of all the religious holidays, lists of all the hikes, or river rafting, etc.

And for many destinations, the book doesn't give enough information to really know where it is, e.g. Watch Elephant Seals Fight (Dec 15), is listed as being in "Año Nuevo State Reserve, California" -- do I consider doing it on at trip to San Diego, to Los Angeles, to Santa Barbara, to San Francisco, or to Humboldt County? I shouldn't have to go elsewhere to figure out where this event actually is (south of SF and north of Monterey Bay).

The book is nicely produced, feels good in the hands, is easy to flip through, with large page numbers at the edges. It is a good travel idea generator, but not a great guide. As a coffee table book, it would make a great gift for the right person.

A great gift idea.

The Lonely Planet franchise has for some years now used its good name to sell the public other travel related books that aren't necessarily guide books to countries or cities. This release is a case in point.

Effectively what this book presents is 365 entries of a great view, wonderful temple, exciting festival, quirky and/or adventurous activity or some other point of interest. As implied in the title, there is an entry for each day of the (non)leap year. Now what makes this a little different to the usual 1000 best places etc kind of books is that some more thought has gone into this one. This work has actually picked certain days for a reason rather than just compiling 365 random things. So it will tell you why you want to be at a certain town on a given day (due to a cultural event or festival etc) or it will explain that this is the best time to visit such-and-such a place as the crowds are gone but the snow hasn't arrived yet. You get the picture....

Therefore this is a fun read for the dreamer. In terms of practicality the entries are too brief to really tell you all you'd need to know. But they will whet the appetite and with the information superhighway (the bits that aren't clogged with dubious sites) at our fingertips there is no reason you couldn't research further an item of particular interest to you.

Now it should be noted that the book is most useful for 2015. For some of the entries they have been able to provide dates for subsequent years through to around 2017 or so.

Still, even years from now this book will be a great way of getting your armchair travel fix. At the time of writing - with Christmas coming up - this is the perfect gift idea.

So many places, so little time

I'll be spending my next birthday partying on Tahiti. If I can tear myself away from the festivities for a few minutes, I'll send a postcard to my wife, who will have recently returned from following Lawrence of Arabia's footsteps - camel steps, actually - through a blistering hot desert in Jordan. At least that's what the book recommends for our birthdays. Okay, that's not likely to happen, but it was fun perusing the book to see the exotic places around the world where the Lonely Planet editors would send us on certain dates. Every continent, including Antarctica, is represented, beginning with Junkanoo in the Bahamas on New Year's Day, and ending with Hogmanay in Edinburgh on New Year's Eve. Believe it or not, North Korea is even on the itinerary. (Hey, if Dennis Rodman can go there...)

For someone with enough time and money, there were a lot of fascinating destinations, including this sampling:
* Fly to the South Pole (November to January). Not just Antarctica, but the South Pole itself - 90 degrees south latitude.
* Climb Kilimanjaro. Are you in good enough shape to tackle Africa's highest mountain?
* Run the Badwater Ultra. Billed as the world's toughest foot race, it's 217 kilometers through Death Valley in July.
* Raft the source of the Nile River in Uganda. Start in Jinga, one of the world's best whitewater rafting destinations.

Not all destinations are quite so exotic, nor or all the activities so adventurous. You can listen to some great music in Austin, Texas, at the South by Southwest music festival, or head for Churchill, Manitoba to take a "tundra buggy" tour and see polar bears up close the safe and easy way. Or raise a stein of beer at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany.

The toughest challenge? You can decide for yourself, but I think it's climbing Mount Everest. There's a very narrow window when the weather cooperates, so you'll have to be there in late May. But keep in mind the fact that more than 200 people have died while trying for the summit.

The strangest challenge? It has to be the wife-carrying festival in Finland. The winner gets the woman's weight in beer. (And maybe a hernia operation.)

It's an informative and fun book for getting some ideas for future travel plans, especially for those who enjoy the challenge and excitement of getting off the beaten path. But if you really prefer "well-beaten" paths, you can make plans to run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain next July. We'll watch for the video on America's Dumbest.

ElBulli 1994-1997

This book and it's two sequels give an insight into the mind of a creative genius, Ferran Adria .They are VERY expensive and really mainly of use to the professional chef. Even then, I suspect that one would have to buy Adria's products to get a few recipes (these are very expensive in Australia). Adria describes some of his techniques but really gives no recipes. I think that even a professional chef will have difficulties in producing anything other than the few recipes they will have because one really needs to have
scientific training as well. In the 2004 book, he is using liquid nitrogen to produce spectacular effects but the use of this product requires such
specialised equipment and training that it is beyond the average chef's capabilities and finance .As an aesthetic exercise, all books are masterpieces.One can access some recipes on the internet but some of these suffer from translation errors (Spanish to English). Ph.D Qual.Chef.

Not in Spanish

This review is not about the book but about the seller. I don't know why I assumed this book was in spanish (that's how I wanted it) and bought it without hesitation because Ferran Adria is my husband's idol. I got it for my husband's birthday and when he opened it we realised that it was in english (El Bulli is in Spain). I contacted the seller asking to change this book for spanish one, he didn't have one, so when I said I wanted to return it he informed me that it didn't have the same price as before because we removed the film when we opened it. My final email was asking how much the difference would be, I never got an answer. Anyway, I have a book in english that my husband will have to translate every step of the way, and that was his birhtday present :(

About the Author

Deborah Lipp was initiated into a traditional Gardnerian coven of Witches in 1981, became a High Priestess in 1986, and has been teaching Wicca and running Pagan circles ever since. She has appeared in various media discussing Wicca, including the A&E documentary Ancient Mysteries: Witchcraft in America, on MSNBC, in The New York Times, and in many smaller TV and print sources.

Deborah has been published in many Pagan publications, including The Llewellyn Magical Almanac, Pangaia, Green Egg, The Druid's Progress, Converging Paths, and The Hidden Path, as well as Mothering Magazine. She has lectured at numerous Pagan festivals on a variety of topics.

Deborah is a technical writer with a variety of skills. She lives in Rockland County, NY, with her son, Arthur, who tap dances, and two cats. Deborah reads and teaches Tarot, designs wire-and-bead jewelry, solves and designs puzzles, watches old movies, hand-paints furniture, and dabbles in numerous handcrafts.

An excellent book

I am fairly new to Wicca and I can say that I didn't know what to expect from a book written by a traditional point of view. I received it in perfect condition and I started reading immediatelly.
I am very satisfied by the quality of the book and the writer's style. She is very informative and specific. She gives plenty of information and the total is solid and full of helpful ideas. It is obvious that she knows well her subject and it is an excellent tool for someone who wants to work with the elements. I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone who wants to seriously work with the elements. If you are looking for just superficial work don't buy it but if you are truly ready to discover yourself and the elements by hard (and sometimes fun) work then this is the book for you.

Understanding the Elements for Themselves and Within

After reading this book I feel that I have a much firmer grasp on the concepts related to each element and their balance with each other. I thoroughly enjoyed the quizzes throughout to better understand how the elements are coming through me and my lifestyle. I found that to be most enlightening. The book was very well written, and has wonderful exercises for bringing any of the elements into your life more, as well as attuning with any of the elements.

Hal Leonard Does it Again

This is a typical Hal Leonard playalong: great music played by musicians better than any I'm ever likely to play with. The production is fantastic. The musicianship is superb. There is nothing more to say really.

I have one gripe, and this is not only Hal Leonard's productions, but almost all playalongs I have encountered: they play a countoff rather than an intro to each song. Why is this an issue? Well in real life when we perform a song we play an intro. If the purpose of a playalong is to train a musician to play with others, what not make the experience complete?
2nd, I use these playalongs as accompaniment on solo gigs. You would be surprised at how much work it can be to rerecord each track adding an intro in the process.
In all fairness Hal Leonard doesn't market these as pro accompaniments. So, back to reason 1; training the player to come in after an intro.

You won't regret buying this edition. It truly is top notch.

This whole series is great for the musician who wants to LEARN, all the way from intermediate to advanced. These are the right songs, well known, well arranged, and most importantly, well written for the LEARNER. These books won't leave you with a bunch of abbreviated cheat sheets and CDs you con't understand. You can start playing right away.

The usual play a long books from Jamie Aebersold and Hal Leonard have somewhat schmaltzy rhythm sections. Not so with this CD. Very funky and therefore, really fun to play with.

Practice is intrinsically motivating. Instinctively, youpractice to improve a certain skill. However, the motivation topractice might be elusive. So, attending school might provideadditional motivation to practice. Elaborating on the idea that perfect practice makesperfect, some scholars believe that mastery requires ten thousandhours of practice--which equates to five years, practicing fortyhours per week. According to the African proverb, "Smooth seas don'tcreate skillful sailors." Expect some failures and challenges alongthe way. Attempt projects, competitions, and challenges that aremore ambitious to expand your talent. In school, especially,when your friends and family suggest you work excessively, youare on the right track!

I wish this book were written sooner!

Short, practical, yet very illuminating. Flemming's book helps take away some of the mystique surrounding the video game industry and how to 'break in'. He provides valuable insight into how the industry works, how studios hire employees, and how to poise yourself into becoming an asset, thus helping you land that first job. The first few chapters alone on picking the right school to attend are more than worth the time of any aspiring video game developer! From there, the rest is gravy, touching on how to conduct yourself in an interview as well as the kind of progression you can expect in the field. Highly recommended!

What you see is what you get

The book is good. It will tell you the "in's and out's" of the industry. The author goes through every step of how to do it. From what type of college to pick to the different positions once your hired to what they mean and what most likely you will be doing in those positions. Its great stuff to learn so you know what you're getting into if you decide its right for you.

Very informative. Contains both industry-specific information as well as basic tips for getting and keeping a job/career (and how they apply to the game industry.) Very well-written, the information is presented attractively. I definitely recommend this book.
