A well-written, thought-provoking book.

Each one of us is born into the world with different talents and skills. Most of us spend a lifetime trying to hone and develop these native born talents to maximize both our own potential and our contribution to the greater social good.
But rarely can anybody these days maximize his or her talents working cloistered and alone. In this world of increasing specialization and complexity, rare indeed is the individual who achieves great success working independently on his or her own.
Long ignored and overlooked, the wonders of collaborative creativity are just beginning to be understood and appreciated. In an important and revealing new book, Shared Minds: The New Technologies of Collaboration, syndicated columnist Michael Schrage examines both the nature of the collaborative process and methods of "fanning the collaborative flame." With frequent reference to legendary creative collaborative teams of the past (Orville and Wilbur Wright, Watson and Crick, Jobs and Wozniak, Lennon and McArtney), Schrage articulates truths that well deserve to be lifted to the forefront of our consciousness.

How This Book Came to be Written

Initially Shared Minds was to be a book about business meetings, and how new technologies can help streamline business meetings. But the author soon realized that the most interesting group work doesn't occur in large business meetings, but in small, energetic teams. So instead of writing a book about business meetings, he decided to closely examine the nature of creative "small group" collaborations. After interviewing many famous scientific and artistic "collaborative teams," Schrage spent a year as a visiting scholar at MIT's Media Lab synthesizing the ideas in this book.

The Personal Attributes of Successful Collaborative Teams

One of the probing questions examined in this book is: "What personal attributes contribute to successful collaborative joint ventures?" How is it that the family team of Orville and Wilbur Wright worked so well together, when other sibling pairs find it a struggle to order pizza together? And what role did Orville and Wilbur's parents play in fostering their creativity and perseverance. (Apparently Orville and Wilbur's mother played a decisive role in showing her sons the methodology of creative invention.)
Along the same lines of thought, what personal qualities allowed Watson and Crick to work together to formulate their landmark three-dimensional model of DNA? True, they had differing and complementary scientific backgrounds. But more than that, they both had a hunger to understand the physical structure of DNA. That intellectual hunger united them in a focused scientific quest.
Speaking on the subject of collaboration, Crick, in his memoirs, sheds light on the nature of his successful teaming with Watson: "Our...advantage was that we had evolved an unstated but fruitful methods of collaboration....If either of us suggested a new idea, the other, while taking it seriously, would attempt to demolish it in a candid but nonhostile manner." Good collaborative teams, therefore, have a tacit understanding that individual ego must necessarily be subsumed to the larger team goal.

Examples of How a "Sharing Ideology" Can Develop

Another subject examined in the book is the similar "sharing ideology" used by great artists and great scientists. There comes a time when human beings rise above the possessive attitude of "that's an idea I thought of first" to the grander attitude of "that's an idea I had a part in creating."
One moving anecdote about collaborative artists occurred when Picasso and his close associates stopped signing their paintings for a brief period in their lives. These artists worked so closely together in producing new art that they genuinely believed that signing any of their paintings would be a misrepresentation of "authorship." In this case, keeping track of who produced which paintings became subservient to the group goal of producing excellent group paintings.

Thoughts About "Idea Development"

At another point in the book Schrage examines the concept of "idea development." How is it that ideas get developed from nascent whims to full-fledged notions? Quoting a modern expert on the subject, John Cleese (the gifted comic writer of Monty Python fame): "The really good idea is always traceable back quite a long way, often to a not very good idea which sparked off another idea that was only slightly better, which somebody else misunderstood in such a way that they then said something which was really rather interesting.... [That's] actually why I have always worked with a writing partner, because I'm convinced that I get to better ideas than I'd ever do on my own."
One perceptive observation in Shared Minds is that some of the best collaborative work occurs in informal, playful settings. The proverbial doodle, hastily sketched on a cafeteria napkin, serves as a forceful reminder of how creativity can best be unleashed in informal settings. Likewise, brainstorming sessions in a formal conference room seldom yield memorable creative results.
All in all, Shared Minds is an important, thought-provoking book. If you've ever spent time thinking about the wonders of collaborative creativity, you ought to find a rich vein of ideas to mine in this book. Some good thoughts, but left me wanting more

I got this book with the hopes that it would give me some good, concrete ideas to use with co-workers and supervisors to improve how we handled projects in the workplace. What I believe I got was chapter after chapter telling me how much productivity will change once people begin to truly collaborate with each other (rather than simply partitioning the work), and how some companies are creating tools to aid this. I felt like I had not been given muchin the way of new techniqiues that I had not already heard from the Total Quality Management movement. There are some nice ideas though. The chapter on language presented some good thoughts, and the description of the qualities of collaborative relationships is good. Overall, the book reminded me of some asian cuisine. It tasted all right, but I was hungry again after a few hours.

Very good read from an excellent JAFF author

This author never disappoints. Her book 'Rainy Days' has long been one of my top picks in this genre and I have re-read it more times than I can remember. It is still my favorite, not to sell this one short. I love the way this author introduces new characters in her stories, keeping our interest. Here we have Darcy's cousin, on the Darcy side, who is a bit of a bad boy and a Wickham cohort. We also have children of one of the Darcy servants who were delightful. Another unwelcome addition is a very determined past lover of Darcy's who is set to win him back no matter who gets in her way. The villains were bountiful with Lady Catherine especially bad.
D & E are such strong personalities that misunderstandings seemed unending but the gradual coming together made the story all the sweeter. Good job!

There are some real howlers in this book- I was most struck when Darcy kissed Elizabeth "arduously." Seriously, an editor needed to go through this and correct the grammar and syntax. I cringe when a writer uses "myself" as the subject in a sentence, as well.(myself is a reflexive pronoun.. A reflexive pronoun is always the object of a sentence.)
The first third of the book was almost acceptable, but the plot spiraled out of control and the bit where Darcy had a month long shack up with someone else's wife was just beyond the pale. And Elizabeth heard about it without batting an eye? There are pages and pages of Darcy and Elizabeth having pretty graphic sex which really did not add much to the story. Some people can write about sexual encounters and feel true to life. In this case, it is bordering on the ridiculous. Why is Elizabeth putting up with continual pain? And why is Darcy so suddenly hysterical about her talking to some Lord? It comes out of no where and is not accurate to character. The drama between them feels manufactured, Elizabeth is too perfect and gracious, and the business with Lady Catherine feels like it was just thrown in there to lengthen the story. Makes no sense. I am relieved that this was free on Kindle unlimited.

A well written book that has a bit of everything, from gossip to conspiracies, I so loved this book and this talented author. I loved that this Author gives you a refreshing storyline that's takes you on a journey of love, suspense and thank god a wonderful HEA. I highly recommend this book.

Great resource for the psych shelf

I found this book to be very helpful for the psych clerkship shelf...as much as it frustrates me when co-med students explain "what works best" and "what you should do because it worked for me," I will say that the questions in this book are much easier than those in the real shelf. However, they go over almost everything you need to know for the shelf itself. I did not use any other resource.

Good Resource for Improving Collaboration & Connection in the Workplace

Social media is not a passing fancy, it's here to stay. So how can we best work with it - not in spite of it? Tony Bingham and Marcia Conner share their ideas in The New Social Learning, a handbook for how organizations and teams can utilize this tool to improve capacity for learning and growing together. They believe we can learn how to leverage the communities our people are already part of, the social media tools they use on their own personal time, and use them to connect and collaborate with each other and our surrounding communities.

Some highlights: Chapter 3 speaks especially to the importance of community and showing up online. Chapter 4 provides practical ideas for growing your organization's social presence "one bite at a time." Chapter 5 presents some patterns, metrics, and goals to consider in analyzing the effectiveness of your impact and influence online. Chapter 6 was especially helpful for me, as I don't work in the traditional corporate setting. It connects the ideas presented throughout the book to roles outside the workplace - such as attending conferences, speaking at events, or even getting to know someone over a good meal.

This book reminds us to be humble enough to admit we need collaboration from others in almost every endeavor, and not be afraid to be seen asking the community for help, opinions, or ideas. It is a rich repository of ideas, relatable examples, actionable ideas, and engaging quotes. It also includes a thorough list of further reading and helpful glossary of social media terms.

My only disappointment is that, despite a brief consideration in Chapter 6, the majority of the book ignored any type of organization outside the traditional corporate world. I believe the principles and ideas are very useful for non-profits, ministries, etc - but at times it was challenging to dig through the workplace focus and apply those ideas to other settings.

Great book to jump into social learning and putting social media to great use for yourself and your teams!

I’m a learning geek and have taken full advantage of social media to learn something new every day. I was excited to read the book The New Social Learning 2nd Edition by Tony Bingham and Marcia Connor. Social media allows people from all over to share and learn from each other. This book champions the benefits of social learning and how it can be used to further learning, organizations, and teams. What better way to engage with others than to put something “out there” and receive hundreds of ideas and thoughts back? That’s social learning.

Bingham and Conner use real life case examples of how business and industry have used social media to grow, empower, and work with the ever changing workforce. They eloquently aim to prove that social media can really transform companies, talent, and even company culture. They explain what a powerful learning tool social media can be when managed and used to encourage more personal connections. Companies need to embrace new social technologies that focus on the talents of everyone, yet bring people together to share strengths.

There is so much negative criticism of social media and The New Social Learning 2nd Edition meets that challenge head to head. The authors effectively shoot down some of the excuses that organizations quote to not use and encourage social media. They reaffirm that social learning does not happen overnight and that social media is a building block on top of other platforms. Various learning methods all need to intertwine. Social learning doesn’t replace formal education or training. It augments it and brings people together. Social learning brings us the wisdom, knowledge, and new tools to our doorstep from around the world.

I eagerly learned how strong company cultures encourage social learning and how impossible it is to prevent people from using social media. You can’t ignore what is in front of people every day so jump into social media and learning so that it benefits everyone and is used for personal and business betterment. This type of learning allows strong people to do their best work. It personalizes the way that people and leaders interact. It brings skills and connectivity to the next level. Social Learning is the new revolution of learning together to grow together.

Whether you manage a company or teams this is a helpful book to pick up to get you thinking. You may look at social media in a fresh way. You may find that your fears of social media are just that – your fears. You will really see for the first time how social learning can really impact a culture and even change a business model. Social learning may increase profits and market growth. Most importantly, social learning is about people, relationships, growth, and connecting. By the way, social media is free and your learning can be too!

The one area that The New Social Learning won’t guide you is how to actually implement social media and social learning into your company or teams. The book skims over the implementation of social learning and does not offer a step by step plan. This is an area where you will need to seek out the assistance of others or find another learning resource.

It's Worth THAT Much

Social Learning is worth every bit of what you invest in it. If the first edition got you started in social learning in your business or organization, this edition will give you a chance to assess where you are. If you don't think your business or organization is using social learning, you're wrong, and the book will help you to recognize it and to put the research base about social learning to work. If, like me, you read the first edition then, like me, you probably forgot some of what you learned and can use a refresher. The new edition is more than a refresher, it includes new material – because a few new things have been learned – and new examples – because a few new things have happened. I learned and re-learned a lot.

Chapter Six: In-person Learning Reimagined was my favorite because I Chair an annual conference and this chapter was a wealth of ideas and information about setting up a conference for effective social learning. Getting people away from the groups they work and live with every day and providing enough time for reflection will be more prominent at my conference next year. I'll implement the backchannel more effectively. We won't be Burning Man but we will incorporate some of what has been learned there. I haven't had this valuable a resource for thinking about making my conference more effective for years.

I give a lot of books away after I read them. I might give this one away too but, I'll definitely replace it with one I can keep for a reference. It's worth that much.

He is a licensed psychologist; licensed marriage & family therapist; internationally certified alcohol and drug counselor; South Dakota certified chemical dependency counselor, Level III; and a nationally certified gambling counselor and supervisor. His specialty areas focus on treating alcoholics, addicts, and pathological gamblers. He is the author of Chemical Dependency Counseling: A Practical Guide (2nd ed.) (2003a), which is the leading treatment manual in the world for chemical dependency counselors. With Dr. Arthur E. Jongsma Jr. (2001) he is the coauthor of The Addiction Treatment Planner, which is the best-selling treatment planner and computer software program for mental health and addiction professionals. He has also written The Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Patient Workbook (2003c) and the Gambling Addiction Patient Workbook (2003b). These workbooks have all of the exercises patients need to enter a stable recovery. His book entitled Treating Alcoholism: How to Help Your Clients Enter Recovery (2004) trains professionals how to treat patients with alcohol problems. He is the author of the book God Talks to You (2000) and the meditation tape A Communication from God (2008) by cdbaby, which help addicts make their first conscious contact with a Higher Power of their own understanding. He is a composer and has completed his second CD, Peace Will Come, music that helps addicts learn the essentials of a spiritual journey. With Dr. Jean LaCour (2004), he wrote the Faith-Based Addiction Curriculum to teach professionals of faith how to treat addiction. Dr. Perkinson is an international motivational speaker and regular contributor to numerous professional journals. He is the webmaster of several web pages, including www.robertperkinson.com, www.alcoholismtreatment.org, and www.godtalkstoyou.com, where he gets over 2.6 million hits a year and answers questions on addiction for free. This book makes you feel good about yourself.

At the last American Society of Addiction Medicine meeting in New York, I found out that most treatment centers were using this book. I read the text and I can see why. The book tells you how to do everything you need to know to treat addiction well. Besides, it makes you feel good about yourself and what you do as a counselor. The book is incredibly loving and healing for anyone to read, even the patient. It contains all of the tests and exercises needed to take a patient through treatment. It leaves no stone unturned.

Nice but old

Perkinson is competent and caring, structured and paced. But it's a bit old, as if all CD treatment was unadulterated Minnesota Model, 28 day inpatient care. Now , in fact, more than 1/2 of those facilities have died on the vine due to managed care, and outpatient rules. Plus we've got patient placement criteria, all kinds of research from Project MATCH and etc., and new techniques like motivational enhancement, stages of change. Maybe if Perkinson put out a second edition and updated it, we'd find it more useful

The Best I Have Ever Read!

This book is a must for every clinician working in the field. I use the material working with both adult and adolescent clients. The concepts are written in a manner which make it appropriate for any group/individual regardless of age, sex, education level, or ethnic background. The Spirituality exercises are the best I have ever seen.
