Buy a basic soc theory book and apply it to law by yourself instead...

This book does a terrible job at explaining even the most basic theories. It is hugely disorganized and hard to follow. It seems as though Anleu tries too hard to make each theory apply to law and this takes away from the true meanings of each theory, especially when her summaries of the theorists are overly complicated when they don't need to be. Buy a basic soc theory book and apply it to law by yourself instead, or better yet, buy the actual theorists works which are sometimes even easier to understand.

Several recent outcomes studies have provided support for the specific lessons in this book:1. Trimarchi, C. L. (2004). The implementation and evaluation of a social skills training program for children with asperger syndrome.Unpublished doctoral dissertation, University at Albany, State University of New York. 
This study examined the effectiveness of group training with ASD children using the structured teaching lessons in Jed Baker's book versus a control group. Results showed at least minimal improvement on 90% of targeted skills compared to the control group. 

2. Koning, C., Magill-Evans, J., Volden, J., and Dick, B.(2013).Efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy-based social skills intervention for school-aged boys with autism spectrum disorders. Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders 7 (2013) 1282-1290.
This study evaluated the efficacy of a 15 week CBT-based social skills intervention for boys aged 10-12 years diagnosed with an ASD. Boys with average or better IQ and receptive language skills were randomly assigned to either a control (n = 8) or intervention condition (n = 7). During intervention, boys attended weekly 2 h long group sessions focusing on self-monitoring skills, social perception and affective knowledge, conversation skills, social problem-solving, and friendship management skills. Sessions were based on work by Baker (2003), Crick and Dodge (1994), and Garcia-Winner (2002, 2005). Comparison of the outcomes using repeated measures analyses indicated that boys receiving the intervention scored significantly better on measures of social perception, peer interaction, and social knowledge than boys who had not received intervention. There were no differences on generalization measures of socialization (i.e. situations that differed from training). The manualized intervention used in this study shows promise but replication with larger samples is needed and generalization to new situations needs to be targeted.

Randomized controlled effectiveness trial of executive function intervention for children on the autism spectrum. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2013 Nov 21.
This study set out to validate the methods used in a manual called Unstuck and On Target by Cannon et al. (2011) which targets frustration management skills. The control group used for this study used lessons based on Baker (2003) manual of social skills training. The lessons used from Baker's manual were not specifically those that target frustration, but instead those that targeted conversation, turn taking and friendship management. Not surprisingly, the Unstuck and On Target group was superior to the control group on frustration measures (remember the control group did not target frustration related skills). What was Interesting though was that the control group showed extensive improvement in social appropriateness and reciprocity skills and the lessons were well liked by schools, parents and students. So although frustration skills were not targeted in the control group, those lessons that were targeted from the Baker (2003) book did in fact lead to large gains in social functioning.

There are clear cut lessons and activities that cover a variety of topics from how to greet others to asking someone on a date. Very valuable for those who need concrete examples of the correct way to approach many different social situations. Could be used for children on the autism spectrum, but also for any child who could benefit from practice in social interaction, even those who are shy. not a book for the uninitiated

A fun and creative book in which De Duve uses Marx’s theory of value and production as a paradigm, or I’d even say, as a matrix in which to place and thus be able to discuss the four, very different, artists in the title. The book was commissioned as a monograph for a gallery show featuring Beuys, Warhol, Kline and Duchamp; but due to de Duve’s (negative) opinion of Kline’s work at the time, the monograph was rejected, and years later released as this book.

I only gave it 3 stars because as much as I had fun reading it, this is not a book for people who don’t know the work of these artists or something of Marx, for that matter.

The first of several Hubbard Dianetic Research Foundations was established and then quickly folded, bankrupted, and then all but one was bought out in Federal court by a new oil well millionare, Donald Purcell. Purcell and Hubbard set up The Hubbard Dianetic Center in Wichita, Kansas. Hubbard lectures often but all is not rosy in "sanity" land as Purcell wants Hubbard to suppress some of his research findings. They break up. One of the auditors, Perry A. Chapdelaine, Sr., B.A., M.A., H.D.A. goes on to Minneapolis, MN where he meets and audits Ronald B. Howes. Howes appears to be a genuine "clear." His attributes seem to be what the future promises for a newly evolved Homo sapiens. Many flock to Howes' doorway and go away convinced that he is not just clear, but also superior to most of us. A tape is made immediately after Howes' auditing, "Prologue to Survival," I & II. Chapdelaine travels the US convincing people that a "clear" is possible. The Dianetic field is rejuvenated. Hubbard goes on to England and then on further to set up the Sea Org, an organization designed to keep the techonology working, to insure it is not corrupted. He also establishes a new religion, the Church of Scientology, charged with delivering the correct technology. Chapdelaine writes and publishes a pamphlet, "Health & Happiness." Howes is published in "Dr. Howes Discusses Humanics" by some of his admiring followers. The giants are now dead but the legacy of John W. Campbell, Jr., Lafayette Ron Hubbard and Ronald B. Excellent conveyance of basic noise control techniques

The authors show a clear understanding of noise and vibration
control and are able to convey this information in a manner
that is easily understood by the novice, while at the same time
not being so simple as to bore the those seeking a refresher course
or just wanting to get other opinions. The section on case studies
was especially helpful to provide real life scenarios for reference.
The illustrations are also very good.

Interesting primer for one to appreciate the basic "concepts" of soundproofing. However, the price is completely and utterly obnoxious. At $100, I expected and hoped for something in addition to basic concepts to include:

(1) basic mathematical and scientific explanations
(2) a lot more voluminous

About the Author
Lee R. Kump is a Professor in the Department of Geosciences, and an associate of the Earth System Science Center and Astrobiology Research Center at the Pennsylvania State University. A native of Minnesota, he received his bachelor's degree in geophysical sciences from the University of Chicago in 1981, and his Ph.D. in marine sciences from the University of South Florida in 1986. While in Florida he spent two summers as a geologist with the United States Geological Survey's Fisher Island Station. In August of 1986 he joined the faculty at Penn State.

Dr. Kump is a Fellow of the Geological Societies of America and London, and a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Geochemical Society, and the Geochemistry Division of the American Chemical Society. His research has been funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Gas Research Institute, the Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society, and Texaco. Dr. Kump became Associate Director of the CIAR Earth System Evolution Program in 2004. Dr. Kump's primary research effort is in the development of numerical models of global biogeochemical cycles. His early work focussed on the carbon and sulfur cycles, and on the feedbacks that regulate atmospheric oxygen levels. More recently his emphasis has shifted to the study of the dynamic coupling between global climate and biogeochemical cycles. He studies the long-term evolution of the oceans and atmosphere, using a combination of field work, laboratory analysis, and numerical modeling.

James Kasting is a Distinguished Professor of Geosciences at Penn State University. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in Chemistry and Physics and did his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in Atmospheric Sciences. Prior to coming to Penn State in 1988, he spent 7 years in the Space Science Division at NASA Ames Research Center. His research focuses on the evolution of planetary atmospheres, particularly the question of why the atmospheres of Mars and Venus are so different from that of Earth. He is also interested in the question of whether habitable planets exist around other stars and is involved with NASA’s proposed Terrestrial Planet Finder Mission(s), which will try to answer that question over the next 15-20 years.

Dr. Robert Crane received his bachelor's degree in physical geography from the University of Reading, England, in 1976. He did graduate work in polar climatology, microwave remote sensing, and sea ice-atmosphere interactions at the University of Colorado's Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) and the National Snow and Ice Data Center, receiving a Master's degree in 1978 and a Ph.D. in 1981. As a Research Associate in the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), he continued his work on the microwave remote sensing of sea ice. Subsequently, Dr. Crane spent a year as a visiting professor at the University of Saskatchewan.

He joined the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University in 1985. Dr. Crane held a joint appointment in the Department of Geography and in the Earth System Science Center from 1985 to 1993, serving as Associate Director of the Center from 1990 to 1993. He was appointed Associate Dean for Education in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences in 1993, and currently holds the position of Associate Dean and Professor of Geography. His areas of specialization include sea ice-atmosphere interactions, synoptic climatology, and regional-scale climate change.

excellent text book - best it its field

I'm a prof at a small liberal arts college, and I love using this text in my course on global environmental change. It works well with non-science majors, as well as with the more advanced science students. It does a superb job with climate change science, which is one of the major focii in my course. It doesn't hesitate to use real physics, math, and chemistry, yet at the same time is accessible to the non-science folks. Lee Kump is one of the premiere geoscientists in the field, and he has lent his broad understanding to this excellent text. It might also be fun to simply read the book if you are not a student.

The 3rd edition is quite similar to the 2nd, with additional material from the 2007 IPCC report.

Excellent (similar to 2nd edition, but this one has key updates)

What I wrote for the 2nd edition can be applied to this edition: Earth System Science is a new field, one that evolves much more quickly than textbooks can be revised. This one is as current as you can expect, and it approaches the field of science in a much better way than any other textbook I have seen. In particular, most earth system texts approach the field by morphing from a traditional discipline. Usually, it's a geology textbook revised to include atmospheric, oceanic, and climatic studies. But earth system science requires an interdisciplinary approach from the start, a problem based approach. Our global environmental problems need this approach, and this book covers them in a reasonably detailed and accurate manner.

This 3rd edition has a new short chapter on the cryosphere. Many recent studies have highlighted the dramatic changes in the cryosphere, so this chapter is a welcome addition. In addition, results and figures from the IPCC 2007 are included, which makes this update worth getting in and of itself given the rapid advances in climate science. I still find the structure of the book, with themes of climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion and loss of biodiversity, to be an outstanding format, as the authors draw links between past, present and future. Impressively, I find that this book is suitable for science and non-science majors alike.

Highly recommended to those interested in any field of geoscience. This book is very clear and precise. It gives a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of our planet. As a matter of fact, it's among some of the most well written textbooks I've ever come across.

It was a smooth read, easy to follow story (even with all those kids, wives, ranchhands and church people) and most of all it peaked my interest to revisit Lees Ferry and a multitude of new places! The ending (though sad) helped me to realize and visualize the hardship people suffered to settle the west. I am recommending your book to all my friends. Thanks for sharing it with me! A Son of the Desert!

One of the most isolated and inaccessible locations in the West, Lee's Ferry, AZ, lies in a narrow valley at the confluence of the Paria and Colorado Rivers. Because of its unique geography, it was the only place in 260 miles where wagons (and later autos) could cross the Colorado.

In 1896, the Mormon Church asked James Simpson Emett to manage the crossing. This remarkable pioneer’s plans for improving the transportation hub included the first cable across the Colorado River. The novel is about a true "son of the desert"--Jim Emett--his plural wives, his many children, and those who came into contact with him and his family.

If you’re interested in any of this Old West history, Meyer’s novel is a facinating read. Includes photographs and a recommended reading list.

Honest Storytelling

Canyon Covenants is a thought-provoking and interesting historical novel based on the lives of a real family. Whether you have ties to Mormonism, polygamy, or the west, you'll find yourself immersed in the world of the people portrayed in this novel. Since I have special interest in all those things, my understanding of my ancestors and myself grew as I read. Be aware that this is an honest look at real people struggling with real problems. It is not a glossed over, sweetened account. It drove me to research several incidents and people and to contemplate my understanding of the history involved. It's a great story and a good education.

About the Author

Douglas Alger is a team leader of the Data Center Infrastructure team at Cisco Systems®, where he helps design, support, and manage the company’s worldwide data centers. He has participated in more than 50 major data center projects, involving new construction or comprehensive infrastructure upgrades.

 

Doug joined Cisco® in 1997. His prior career was as a newspaper reporter, where he wrote for several newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from San Jose State University.

A fantastic resource for those who build data centers

When I was tasked with designing and overseeing the construction my company's new data center, the first thing I did was a deep research dive - and while there is lots of information on the subject available on the internet, this book was probably the single most helpful resource I relied upon during our build-out. Although it is beginning to get a bit dated, almost all of the recommendations and suggested policies / procedures make sound sense today, and it helped me to avoid many easy-to-make mistakes. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for data center design, construction, or even maintaining servers outside of a data center - the ideas in this book can be applied to many situations outside of the data center, and helped to make me a more critical and careful system administrator.
