This is great for just a quick introduction to the language and if you want to pick up common phrases/sentences. The draw backs are it's not very in depth and the pace is slow (but for good reason; it's to give the listener plenty of time to repeat) and the speakers are very monotone, which can make it seem boring and like it's taking even longer. A way to cope with it is that I sometimes read through the section of the book I'm going to listen to and then listen to the CD later while I do other things, such as exercise, cook, housework, etc. Anyone who is looking for an in depth book that breaks it down piece by peice and explains the nitty gritty of it, this is not for you. However, if you're looking for something quick that will help you pick up common phrases quickly, this is a good choice.

This is an ok product, but its not really for beginners. There is no pronouciation guide, and its just listen and repeat, but sometimes you cant understand the person speaking. It would be good for a brush up course, but theres too much info you dont need for simple conversation.

I have recently come back in contact with a long time friend from Germany and he speaks fluent German but, I lost the ability once i moved away back to the USA. This guide is allowing me to pick back up on phrases and have conversations with him. My goal is to become fluent just as he is by 2014 if not sooner.!

This book will help students to design their own organic synthesis, giving a wide coverage of synthetic methods. The disconnection approach is used throughout so that starting materials are chosen after analysing the structure of the target molecule. There are forty chapters: those on the synthesis of given types of molecule alternate with strategy chapters in which the methods just learnt are placed in a wider context. The instructional chapters cover many ways of making each type of molecule starting with simple aromatic and aliphatic compounds with one functional group and progressing to molecules with many functional groups. The number and position of these functional groups provides the classification for these chapters. The strategy chapters cover questions of selectivity, protection, and stereochemistry, and develop more advanced strategic thinking via reagents specially designed for difficult problems. Examples are drawn from pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, natural products, pheromones, perfumery and flavouring compounds, dyestuffs, monomers, and intermediates used in more advanced synthetic work. Reasons for wishing to synthesise each compound are given, and further examples can be found in the accompanying workbook which also gives many problems and solutions classified in the same way as the main text. The book will also assist more experienced chemists who feel they are out of touch with present day thinking on the subject.

Workbook for Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach The workbook which supports this text provides an extra selection of examples. Each example is analysed in the same way as those in the main text with disconnections followed by synthesis, allowing the student to explore a wider range of types of target molecule and synthetic method. The main function of the workbook is, however, to provide a graded series of problems which extend the student's experience of the types of molecules being synthesised by organic chemists. These, together with the examples, are classified into the same 40 chapters as the main text so that it is possible to use them in conjunction with it. Each problem is followed by a suggested solution or solutions analysed in the same way as the examples and no methodology other than that introduced in the main text is required. Examples and problems are interspersed to provide a developing chain of argument.

I really like the approach of this book

I bought this book as part of a required text for an advanced organic chemistry class as an undergraduate. I really like the approach of this book! It offers various strategies of "disconnecting" complex organic molecules into smaller and more recognizable molecules which is very helpful if you are interested in working in a synthetic chemistry lab or research. After taking two semesters of undergrad organic chemistry, I was able to understand and logically progress from the simple molecules that one can disconnect from larger molecules. It also offers various useful tables, and reactions from actual organic chemistry literature that demonstrate how a particular disconnection can lead to simple starting materials.

If you are buying this book to learn the "Disconnection Approach," I highly recommend that you also buy the companion book: "Workbook for ORGANIC SYNTHESIS The Disconnection Approach (2nd ed.)."

Excellent, definitive

An amazing and incisive description of retrosynthetic techniques, written at the advanced undergraduate level.

My criticisms would be:

(1) Rather too terse at some points; a few more words would make it flow more smoothly;
(2) As the book progresses, there are increasing references to "Strategy and Control", and more annoyingly, the workbook; the text is not entirely self contained, and I should not have to purchase the workbook for simple clarification;
(3) The index is really poor. This is the book's principal failing, and makes hunting around for cross references much harder than it should be.

Nevertheless, this is a wonderful work on an exciting and important area of organic chemistry, and I heartily recommend it.

Simple, easy to implement with substantial results

I have read and continue to read many parenting books. I look for the small nugget or two from each book and try implementing them. If they add to my parenting or my children then we keep them, if not we discard and move on. Parenting is always a "work in progress" as far as I'm concerned and I'm constantly looking to do it better, more effective, and increase the results.

This book is not only a simple and quick read, the principals are very defined and easy to implement. Making this the best ratio of low work (reading and implementation) to high yeild (difference in children) of any parenting book I have read. Some books take me weeks to read and understand then another few weeks to fully implement. This book took me only three days to read and fully understand and then start trying the principals on my children. Talk about simple, easy and practical!

I highly recommend this book to any and all parents (of children of any age), my oldest is 18 and my youngest is 7, and I can see a benefit to them all (as well as myself). Great job Shane, you hit a fantastic subject and made it easy to understand in a practical and achievable way. Wish more parenting books were like that.

The first few chapters are a little slow, by the halfway point I didn't want to put it down! It ended too soon, I wanted it to keep going (isn't that how all good books are?.) If you are a parent, there is no reason not to purchase and read this book, then pass it along to another parent.

This is my 3rd favorite parenting book of all time. About the Author
Das Goravani was born Richard Edward Wurst in 1960 in Oakland California. Although raised Irish Catholic, and he considered entering the Seminary to become a priest, he instead took interest in the Indian Vaisnava Religion at the age of 19, and devoted much of his life to its Astrological Science. Teaching himself computer programming in the 1980s, he realized the potential for this emerging technology to make Astrology accessible to the public at large. He created one of the first, and best loved Jyotish programs: Goravani Jyotish.

This is a useful book, but it could have been enhanced with references to the primary sources (the sources have not been mentioned at all!) and some explanatory notes, particularly on contradictory significations attributed to the same house, sign, or planet.

I returned this book shortly after receiving it. I felt it was organized in a way that made it very difficult to use. There was no explanation of the planetary indications just lists of items that may be associated and it lacked a cohesiveness. I could not picture myself referring to it as a resource, so I returned it.

Talbert is a leading authority on Luke. He was concerned with intertextuality before it became fashionable. His comments use the literary form of the text to illuminate the text. He makes liberal use of the book of Acts as well as ancient Greek literature to interpret the third gospel. This commentary makes a great complement to a more traditional source critical commentary like Fitzmyer's.

About the Author
GREGORY R. OSCHE, PhD, received a doctorate in physics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1975. For the past twenty-three years, he has specialized in the field of electro-optic systems development at Raytheon Company where he has functioned as Systems Engineering Manager, Multisensor Systems Manager, and technical director on a variety of military laser radar and multisensor programs. He currently holds the position of Engineering Fellow within the Air and Missile Defense Business Unit of Raytheon Electronic Systems. Dr. Osche has published over thirty technical papers in fields ranging from elementary quantum theory to optical detection theory. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, a member of the Optical Society of America and of the American Physical Society.

Useful, but ...

It is a good book for good understanding of the concept but it has a major fall back. There are some mistakes and missing points in formulas and derivations such that you feel to derive every formula again.

It would be nice if codes for the simulated images and etc. in the book is also included.

Great Resource for this mysterious brew

Sours are the oldest type of beer, before commercial technology allowed us to produce the clean, quick, and drinkable beers we all enjoy today. But to drink a well done sour is to take one back to our ancestors. Not too mention the research that supports the neurological benefits of lactobacillicus- (see Radiolab episode "Guts")

This book goes a long way to demystify the process. It isn't as superficial as some of the other style series books. But you won't be able to ever master a style this ancient without the guidance of a mentor, something you won't find online or in a book.

nothing short of fantastic

I can't believe the amount of information in this book. It is so incredibly detailed, I can't believe that it didn't take a lifetime to accumulate this. this is a must have, not must read, for any brewer, home or pro, that is at all interested in beer with wild yeast. I got a little bored with the listing of breweries and what they do, etc. I can absolutely see how this would round out, what would otherwise be a reference or text book. I was simply looking for practical and well founded knowledge about brett, lacto, pedio, etc. THIS IS IT, take my word for it. I was simply blown away at several points during this read. As an example the author suggests that you could add brett, pedio and other cultured yeasts on a schedule that was based on their life cycles found in a spontaneously fermented lambic. Fantastic idea. I can't wait to try this. This book is packed full of useful, practical info on wild yeast.

This book has made me crave more info on the subject (although I don't at all expect anything to surpass or even rival the info in this book), and guess what, there isn't anything, not currently in print anyway. this is your book on wild yeast, accept no subsitutes.

I hadn't brewed at all when I purchased this book, but I was very curious, with all the hoopla about sanitation and temperature control, how humans managed to brew anything for the last thousands of years without bleach and refrigeration and you name it. This book doesn't necessarily answer all of that, but it is incredibly informative about Belgium lambics and Flanders beers. This is a 'how it's done' book not a story-telling travel through the region tasting beers with colorful characters, nonetheless I found it fascinating! A little repetitive in places which didn't bother me since I knew so little about these beers and the means of creating them. And since the author appears to hail from the U.S. of A. he is familiar with and writes about commercial lambics on this side of the pond. I loved the section on barrels. And for those of us who want to give a lambic or a Flanders beer a go, there are a few recipes included. A nice, chunky bibliography is in the back.
