The Classical Cookbook: Revised Edition, by Andrew Dalby, Sally Grainger

Fifty recipes from the ancient world are presented in a fresh, new design alongside reproductions of ancient wall paintings, mosaics, vases, and household objects.  Originally published in 1996, The Classical Cookbook was the first book about ancient dining to draw from both Greek and Roman writings. Each chapter describes a different social gathering and the food that might have been served on such an occasion. From a menu inspired by Homer’s Odyssey in 700 B.C., to the offerings at a typical Greek symposium or drinking party in fourth century Athens, to the special treats at a Macedonian wedding feast, the recipes presented here suggest the true variety of food and social life in the ancient Mediterranean.

Enjoy Parthian chicken, fish in coriander sauce, squash Alexandria-style, cabbage the Athenian way, pancakes with honey and sesame seeds, and many more tasty dishes. Each original recipe is followed by a version for today’s cook.

Lovely combination of recipes and historical information
By M. Gacsaly
Excellent book for both its recipes (easy to follow with directions given for both the English and American cook) and its description of Roman life, for both the Roman commoners and the citizens of stature. If you want to have a Roman banquet, or a simple, traditional Roman meal, this is an ideal book. I especially enjoyed the well-written sections on Roman history, which perfectly integrate the recipes with what we know about the people's lives and the ingredients which were available to them. I looked at every Roman cookbook I could find, in both the USA and England, and my three favorites are: Classical Cookbook, by Dalby and Grainger, and, A Taste of Ancient Rome, by Ilaria Giacosa, and Roman Cookery, by Mark Grant. The latter two have more recipes than the first, but Classical Cookbook is a quality book with exquisite pictures, illustrations and explanations.

Excellent
By Cosmas Bisticas
Fifteen years after it's original release this book remains one of the best on the subject. I would like to clarify that, as the authors point out through references to Odysseus, Philoxennus, Macedonia etc. it explains very cleary that the Greeks were those who elevated cookery into an art, through trial and error and endless experimentation. It focuses primarily on techniques and recipes that originated in ancient Greecemuch later to be passed on to ancent Rome. I make this point as a reviwer has incorrectly given the impression that the book focuses primarily on Roman cookery. One might argue that they at that time in history they were one in the same as Romans brought Greek slaves and free Greek cooks to prepare their meals for them ultimately consuming the same dishes. Over time, the simple dishes introduced by the Greeks became more complicated and lavish, an evolution that has continued till today. There are several other books available that cover this period in detail.

Having made the above points, the author has done an excellent job in the first 30 pages of the book to explain the intricacies of the recipes that follow, explaining the ingredients used, where to find them and substitutions that can be made in order to get an approximate idea of what the Ancient Greeks and later the Romans enjoyed at their tables. It is a good read regardless if you plan to execute the recipes or not.

Try the Roman Mushrooms
By Rebecca Menes
An excellent historic cook book. Solid history. Author is careful with the reconstructions, explaining what is known, and what is inferred, for each recipe. And the recipes are good. I especially like the mushrooms with fish sauce and honey. Try it.

Better than Fiction
By Alaturka
Friendly provides an excellent, eye level review of this momentus battle that opened the gates of Asia Minor and eventually Europe itself to the conquering hords of Turks. He establishes the scene well, overview of the Byzantine and Seljuk Turkish politics and culture was excellent. Given he is not a professional historian, he does an excellent job and use of key references to expose these topics that are so poorly covered in literature. Historical impact, reaction in Middle East and Europe to this famous battle has been presented well. He has evaluated the tactics and strategy in a lot more detail then the generals on either side almost. Topic is rather narrow but for the history buff full of good stuff.

The significance of the battle of Manzikert to the Byzantine Empire
By Larry Hart
“That Dreadful Day” describes the battle of Manzikert and its subsequent conquest by the Seljuk Turks in August 1071 C.E. Its loss to the Byzantines had a long and melancholy effect. Byzantine historians felt the loss so deeply that it is never referred to in later documents by anything other than that “dreadful” or “horrible” day. The author seized on this point in describing the events leading to and directly after the event, giving it a more exalted status than perhaps it deserves. His thesis argues the importance of the loss of this one city and its effect on the future as a whole for the Eastern Empire.

"Byzantium, comparably the world’s greatest power for seven centuries, lost at one blow the richest part of its domain, its heartland, leaving the rest to be plucked at and torn away piece meal by predatory neighbors until after the longest death rattle in history, its last remnant, the city of Constantinople, fell to the enemy’s sword." (P. 17)

Manzikert, as battles went during those times did not really distinguish itself in any particular or memorable way. However, it was the culmination of approximately a fifty-year period that saw the Byzantine Empire go from its greatest height in 1025 to the loss of Manzikert in 1071. “Less than fifty years later the Empire was reduced to a fraction of its former extent” (p. 57). In 1025 Byzantium was more powerful and influential than at any time in its previous history. Its borders extended for “a thousand miles from west to east.” It stretched from the Danube in the north to the Islands of Crete and Cyprus in the South (P. 57, also see map on page 72-73). When one views the significance of Manzikert from this vantage it becomes clear as to the significance of the loss.

The Empire was strong in 1025 and showed no signs of slowing down. From that point on Byzantium began to experience invasions from all sides. Franks and Normans felt bold enough to attack and did so on a number of occasions for different provocations. In the East the Muslims seem to do the same. Little by little these attacks wore the empire down and took their toll on its power and strength.

Of course it would be another three hundred and fifty years before the empire actually fell, so with the benefit of historical hindsight we might conclude that Byzantium’s historians who referred to Manzikert in such apocalyptical terms, were a bit premature in their assessments. Professor Friendly himself suggests that Manzikert might have not been the disaster that it was labeled. “To be sure, the amputations suffered at Manzikert and in the years immediately following were not immediately lethal” (58). However, the author still saw fit to regard Manzikert as the beginning of the end of the empire.

Manzikert might indeed have been the major blow that the author insists that it was, but an argument can be made that Manzikert would not have even been possible without having to defend the empire and engage in small but costly military campaigns for a number of years before the battle. Allthough Professor Friendly does not express it, it is hard to conceive that only the loss of Manzikert was lamented. Indeed, it is Manzikert that is remembered. The author suggests that the best way to judge this time and therefore understand the devastating loss at Manzikert is to realize the “Zenith” and “Nadir” the empire seemed to experience in a very short period of time. “The depth of the fall of Byzantium is best measured by the altitude of the peak on which it previously stood. “ (p.59) As the author’s thesis states, it was this “peak” from which the empire stood culminating some fifty years later with the fall of Manzikert to the Turks.

Friendly uses a number of primary and secondary sources to make his points. Along with the standard scholars like Runciman and Charanis, he makes use of a number of original sources who lived during that era. However, he is careful to distinguish between Arab and Byzantine accounts. The reason for this is simple. Arab accounts are regarded as not reliable and Friendly is quick to point this out. For example, Bar Hebreaus reported that the Turk General, Afsin, had “reached the walls of Constantinople itself.” There are no Byzantine reports that this ever took place. Friendly warns the reader to view the report with skepticism as he prefaces Afsin’s success with “ The legend arose, which Bar Hebraeaus reported as fact” (p.162).

The author utilizes the memoir of Michael Attaleiates to tell most of the main thrust of the story, the actual battle of Manzikert. Attaleiates, present for “That Dreadful day” provides the only Byzantine eyewitness account of the battle.

In my opinion this is not a book for scholars. It is far too general for that. However, it is a good resource for someone like myself, who is interested in eleventh century Byzantium and its interaction with the Muslim world. This is one of those historical accounts that introduces the student to the subject matter. It is used primarily as a “discovering tool” so that one can decide what specifically would be of interest to research more thoroughly.

The deflation of the subprime mortgage bubble in 2006-7 is widely agreed to have been the immediate cause of the collapse of the financial sector in 2008. Consequently, one might think that uncovering the origins of subprime lending would make the root causes of the crisis obvious. That is essentially where public debate about the causes of the crisis began—and ended—in the month following the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the 502-point fall in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in mid-September 2008. However, the subprime housing bubble is just one piece of the puzzle. Asset bubbles inflate and burst frequently, but severe worldwide recessions are rare. What was different this time?

In What Caused the Financial Crisis leading economists and scholars delve into the major causes of the worst financial collapse since the Great Depression and, together, present a comprehensive picture of the factors that led to it. One essay examines the role of government regulation in expanding home ownership through mortgage subsidies for impoverished borrowers, encouraging the subprime housing bubble. Another explores how banks were able to securitize mortgages by manipulating criteria used for bond ratings. How this led to inaccurate risk assessments that could not be covered by sufficient capital reserves mandated under the Basel accords is made clear in a third essay. Other essays identify monetary policy in the United States and Europe, corporate pay structures, credit-default swaps, banks' leverage, and financial deregulation as possible causes of the crisis.

With contributions from Richard A. Posner, Vernon L. Smith, Joseph E. Stiglitz, and John B. Taylor, among others, What Caused the Financial Crisis provides a cogent, comprehensive, and credible explanation of why the crisis happened. It will be an essential resource for scholars and students of finance, economics, history, law, political science, and sociology, as well as others interested in the financial crisis and the nature of modern capitalism and regulation.

What caused the financial crisis? Was it the capitalism or the regulations?
By Jean Parmesan
The financial crisis of 2008 was unusual, but not unprecedented. Over the past 25 years, there have been a string of financial crises including the 1984 bankruptcy of Continental Illinois, the 1987 stock market crash, the 1995 Mexican peso crisis, the 1998 bailout of LTCM and the 2000 internet stock bubble.

Under a system of regulated capitalism, the operative question is who is at fault? Was it the government technocrats or the greedy capitalists?

Editor Jeffrey Friedman takes a Hayekian approach to the most recent financial crisis of 2008 and concludes, along with his contributors, that the primary problem was information failure (i.e. ignorance on the part of regulators and market participants). But, he makes an important distinction: information failures work very differently among regulators and market participants. While there may be heterogeneous opinions among regulators as to the correct regulations, only one theory gets codified into law. In contrast, discordant theories between market participants lead to competition and a darwinian weeding out of erroneous strategies via profits and losses.

In order for pragmatic regulation to work, regulators must be able to anticipate the unintended consequences of a given regulation considered in isolation as well the interaction of a regulation with previously codified regulations. Friedman and his contributors conclude that the following regulations interacted in unexpected ways to produce the crisis:

1. SEC decisions in 1970s which produced a ratings cartel among three credit rating firms. This disabled competition and information in the financial markets.
2. HUD directives in the 1990s which spurred nonprime and subprime lending by Freddie and Fannie Mac.
3. The loose monetary policies of the federal reserve commencing in 2001 which produced a spate of artificially low interest rates.
4. The Basel accords enacted in the US in the 1990s which conferred significant capital advantages to banks who securitized loans through Freddie and Fannie.
5. Non-recourse laws passed by different states over the years, which enabled borrowers to default with little consequence.

Combine these policies with the ever present principal/agent problem in markets and the result was the significant undermining of market discipline and prudence. CEOs and investment firm employees earned large bonuses securitizing dubious loans and homeowners with underwater mortgages were able to default with little financial consequence. Equity holders may have taken a large haircut, but bondholders walked away nearly scot free. The taxpayer was the only party left to pick up the tab.

Essays in the book include contributions from Nobel laureates Vernon Smith and Joseph Stiglitz as well as several other economists including Amar Bhide, Peter Wallison, Larry White, Daron Acemoglu, John Taylor and Richard Posner.

This book is the most complete series of essays on the financial crisis of 2008 that I have read. Highly recommended.

The astrologers ponder the origin of the meteor
By Dr. Toad
Let me first say that this is an outstanding book on the most important issue of the day. It should be required reading for anyone - but then again so should be the note on one's mortgage. Or one's tax return, for that matter.

An august group of Economists, from both sides of the political divide (the politics are quite visible) convene to answer the questions "Was this a failure of Capitalism, of Regulation (by omission or by commission) or of the Economics profession itself?" I think the title of my review expresses my own opinion.

The book is a collection of essays bracketed by overviews by Jeffrey Friedman (a "red economist") and Richard Posner (a "blue" one). Each reviews the factors cited in the previous review and weighs in on their assessment of the importance of each.

The essays are divided into three parts - in the first, the disaster is considered in historical context, going back to the roaring 20's, and discussing the evolution of finance and government policy to the present. In the second, the contributing factors are examined in detail - monetary policy, political factors, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the securitization of mortgage debt, the rating thereof by S&P, Moody's and Fitch, the Basel accords and swaps. The picture that emerges is that of the unintended consequences of regulatory good intentions. A healthy (yet lustful, insouciant and somewhat impulsive) man is prescribed a handful of well-tested medications, and they interact in a way that lands him in the ICU where he remains to this day.

All the material is thought-provoking. But what I found fascinating was the third group of essays in which the profession itself is put in the dock. Daron Acemoglu ruminates on the continued existence of the business cycle, the importance of "institutions" (which he does not define, but hints that they provide "incentives"), and observes that when performing due diligence, it is not sufficient to observe that one's counterparty has a good reputation. Really, Daron? Buying a credit-default swap from Goldman isn't the same as buying a cola with a red and white logo on the can? He states "The intellectual argument for the financial bailouts in September of 2008 was that the organizations clearly responsible for the problems that we are in today should nonetheless be saved because they are the only ones with the 'specific capital' to get us out of our current predicament". That's not an intellectual argument - it's Stockholm syndrome. Daron has good company with the Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz who occupies an entire chapter weaving political conspiracy theories titled "Anatomy of a Murder". Only the murder of your own reputation, sir - apparently Nobel laureates in Economics cannot be inconvenienced to formulate actual thoughts.

The final chapter, titled "The Financial Crisis and the Systemic Failure of the Economics Profession", indeed delves hard and deep into the desires of the Social Science that wants very much to be a Hard Science, but which lacks elements like the repeatability of experiments and time invariance.

The marriage of economics to politics is evident everywhere in this book and, like Jounalism (similarly married), Economics is ripe for a real case of "creative destruction". Indeed, when Pharoah has indulged the astrologers so that they might read the fate of his kingdom in the sky, why should he not respond to the crater where his capital once lay by taking out their still-beating hearts and hurl them down the steps of the temple?

It might work. God knows a raft of Nobel prizes didn't.

Okay

Among all the books covering the financial crisis, this must be one of the best. The authors cover the crisis in great and exhausting detail and it is clear that the research was done. Without doubt, I would endorse this book. At the same time, a worthy competitor is The Causes of the Financial Crisis: The Role of the American Government and the Federal Reserve which is worth a read as well.
