A Classic of Classical Greek historical writing

There are some books which merit a far wider recognition and respect than they will ever receive. Admittedly, the subject matter of Hammond's book is not only daunting, but downright unfashionable. To my mind, this only contributes more to its already tremendous value. As histories of Classical Greece go, Hammond's 'History of Greece' is a marvel of clear, authoritative writing, compelling scholarship, and overall mastery of a difficult and still intriguing topic.
While one could perhaps make the case that the book is now some fifteen years old, and therefore somewhat in need of revision, the overwhelming detail and clarity of the work must mitigate that concern. Hammond has presented what may fairly be called a masterpiece of Classical Greek history. His coverage of subjects ranging from politics to the arts, from the Persian to the Peloponnesian wars, or from Alcibiades to Xenophon (although biographical details are, perhaps of necessity, somewhat lacking) all combine to form a coherent, thorough accounting of the rise of Greece.
Enhanced by black&white photographs and an assortment of excellent maps, Hammond's 'History of Greece to 322 B.C.' should be considered an essential volume not only for the shelves of the Classical scholar, but for anyone who wishes a better understanding of one of the founding nations of the Western world.

Fat and fun

Though this is a 650+ page history book, Hammond does a great job of telling the tale of ancient Greece with excitement in addition to providing detailed information. If you need a one-book history of Greece from its beginnings to the death of Alexander the Great, this will probably suit your needs. There are some pictures and maps, but if you actually want to know what's going on, an atlas of ancient Greece might help.

Interestingly, Hammond is especially thorough where battles are concerned and sometimes includes maps to illustrate the placement of ships or soldiers in a given battle. He is also adept at describing the intellectual and artistic achievement of the Greeks and fitting them into the narrative of events. The book is well organized and the table of contents show clearly what each segment of the book is about.

This is, simply put, the definitive single volume history of Greece up to the death of Alexander the Great. If you are looking for an in depth look at the political and military history of the Greek cities, this is exactly what you are looking for. Also includes excellent maps.

About the Author
Dan Graur is John and Rebecca Moores Professor in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Houston and Professor Emeritus of Zoology at Tel Aviv University, Israel. Having earned a B.Sc. (Biology) and an M.Sc. (Zoology) at Tel Aviv University, he completed a Ph.D. (Genetics) at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Co-author of two editions of Fundamentals of Molecular Evolution (Sinauer Associates, 1991 and 2000), Dr. Graur has published close to 200 articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, commentaries, technical notes, and book reviews. He has served as Associate Editor of Molecular Biology and Evolution (1995-2011) and Genome Biology and Evolution (since 2009). Dr. Graur received an Alexander von Humboldt Research Award in 2011 and, in 2015, was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition to his research in molecular and genome evolution, Dr. Graur is interested in the societal implications of genetics and molecular biology.

A brilliant and masterly account of molecular evolution

Dan Graur has written a masterly account of molecular and genome evolution, and I expect to be getting more and more from it as I re-read and refer to it. As anyone who follows his blog Judge Starling (dan = judge in Hebrew, graur = starling in Roumanian) will know, he is not someone to be discreet about his opinions. His often expressed contempt for the ENCODE project, which cost around $300000 to arrive at the claim that the great majority of the human genome is “functional” makes his blog worth reading for that alone.

As well as explaining protein, nucleic acid structure, mutations and so on in the early chapters, Graur explains in some detail how phylogenetic trees are constructed from molecular data., describing, for example, the simplest method, UPGMA, as well as others such as the widely used computational method, CLUSTAL.

He is not frightened of giving the mathematical basis for his analyses, and assumes that his readers will not be, either. It would be an exaggeration to say that the mathematics is trivial or very simple, but little of it should be beyond the reach of readers who make the effort.

I was particularly interested in his calculation that if 80% of the genome is functional, as claimed, then each of us must have at least 30,000,000,000,000,000,000 children if the population is to avoid collapsing from lethal mutations. As he rightly says, this result is “bonkers”, but there is nothing wrong with the calculation, so the starting point cannot be right. He believes, as I do, that most mutations are neutral, and that the human population can easily avoid collapsing from the genetic load represented by the few that are not. I had read of this calculation in his blog, and I was anxious to check that it was in his book, as I wanted to refer to it in a book of my own.

From time to time Graur injects some sly humour into his presentation. He refers to a class of DNA that he defines Lazarus DNA as rubbish DNA that is mutated to functional DNA, saying that the name comes from “the second most famous resurrected corpse in fiction”.

The only fault worth mentioning is that Graur sometimes shows wrong structures for amino acids and nuceic acid bases: when he first defined an amino acid he said that it contains an amino (-NH2) and a carboxyl (-COOH) group, but that is impossible, because these two groups cannot coexist to any significant extent. On the facing page he has a table showing all the common amino acids in correct ionized forms, but a couple of pages later we are back to uncharged structures, as we also are later in the book. If this were a biochemistry textbook it would be a serious error, as one cannot understand the properties of biological molecules without understanding the ir structures. (A generation or two ago most biochemistry textbooks exhibited the same failure to understand ionization, but today it has largely disappeared.) However, Graur is not a biochemist, and the fault can perhaps be forgiven in a book in which the points being made do not require correct structures.

Alan Charles Kors is Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Atheism in France, 1650-1729 and (with Harvey A. Silvergate) The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America's Campuses. Edward Peters is Henry Charles Lea Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. Among his books are Torture and The First Crusade, both also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Superb collection of medieval documents on witchcraft from 400-1770 in Europe

If you're someone interested in the growth of witchcraft during the medieval era, you must own this text. Comprised of 69 treatises of well-known individuals in the time span mentioned, this book basically covers the whole shebang and they're all original sources. A superb text for a student of medieval history, witchcraft specifically and its growth over 1300 years, and the crushing results of such beliefs. You can pick or choose who to read depending on your interests or gobble up the whole book and come away well-rounded regarding your knowledge of the rise of witchcraft in medieval Europe. A must-have book for those studying this period.

Great collection

This book is a collection of source documents, arranged in roughly chronological order, relating to the development of the medieval views on witchcraft and the witch craze. It ends with later, more skeptical voices such as Reginald Scot.

The book begins with excerpts from the works of St. Augustine, eventually works its way through the writings of Thomas Aquinas, the Malleus Malifacarum, witch trial testimony, and even dissenting opinions in verdicts. It shows clearly the development of the image of witch from misguided pagan through diabolical child-killer and the eventual triumph of skepticism in the wake of dangerously self-fulfilling witch hunts.
